texturing in cinema 4d
i am trying to figure out to to texture different poligons of the same objet. i want to give each poligon a different texture and i dont know how. for i now i found a way that makes it look like it. i just create a plain and put it on the poligon and give the plane a different texture. i am prety sure there has to be a way of texturing each poligon in cinema 4d and bodypaint plugin. can anyone tell me how its done? i would also like, if its not too much trouble, to get some beginner texturing tips and explanations.

Re: texturing in cinema 4d
well ..if you want different textures on the object you should use BodyPaint or you should select the polygons which should have a different texture. Then.. you need to save this selection and when you will put the texture on the object you can specify that the tex must be on the saved selection.
post a pic ... so I can see what the object is .. which version of C4d are you using ? |

ok ..to save the selection .. select the polygons > go on the top menù > Selection > Set Selection .. a tag will appear next to the object ...give a name at the selection (when you click on the tag you will get its attribute .. go on the basic properties and get a name for the selection) ..now assign the texture at the object and specify the name of the saved selection as you can see in the 2th pic.

well ... the method that I showed you is a way ..it is useful if you have to make textures for a simple object like a table, etc...
but if you have to make textures for a face, for example, you have to use BodyPaint or you have to make procedural textures. about the uvw mapping : create a basic texture with Photoshop, produce a new document, choose the resolution that you want (512x512 pxl, 1024x1024 pxl or higher). saves the document in .psd. create a new material in c4d (Materials> File> New Material) and apply the textures that you have just saved into color channel. assign the texture to the object, choose the proper projection (example: for a face you will choose a cylindrical projection). use the Texture Axis Tool to verify that the projection is correct (pic. 1). |

how you can see in the image, I have chosen a "flat" projection because the thickness of the object is very thin...
well .. if you go to BodyPaint you can see how the texture is projected on the object (pic. 2) |

now, for to modify the mesh, you have to generate the uvw coordinates (pic. 3)
go in the browser of the objects, select the material applied to the object and from the browser menù : texture> generate UVW coordinates...

now you have to unwrap the mesh. Select the points from the 3d view in the C4d, go to BP and bride the points toward the outside, performs this operation for all the overlapped polygons.

add a transparent layer to the texture. This can be done with Cinema (Layers > right mouse > New Layer) or with Photoshop.
select the "Brush Tool" from the BP's interface and set "size = 1; Pressure and Hardness = 100%" in the Active Tool panel. select all the polygons and use the "Draw Current Brush Around The Selected Polygons" command. (pic. 6) This command will draw the contours of the selected polygons (you will have therefore on the layer the mesh that you see in BP). it is useful to have a precise reference when you will draw the texture with Photoshop. Save the texture. |
