Finally managed to render my entry, rendering the particle fur used up 1.6 GB of memory (3DSMAX7 + Mental Ray)

Modelling : 30 minutes (some FFD work on spheres, plus a lathed spline)
Texturing : 5 minutes
Rendering : 5 hours 41 minutes (of which 2 minutes was actual rendering time, the rest was recovering from STOP errors and crashes due to running out of memory and / or MAX fatal exceptions)

It's a furry egg chair in an egg cup , probably not practical, but fun! There are some bald spots in the fur as any more fur caused nasty crashes...

A VERY original and well done model.
Maybe next time you could have done two things that would help you in both the rendering process and the looks.

Like firstly having the fur cast shadows would help alot to enhace the image. (Though it would demand even more memory)

And secondly: Why didn't you texture the inside of the egg in the fur's texture and colour?
You wouldn't have blank spots and maybe you would be off with only a dence blotch in the front bit of it

Well just my two cents.. great models everyone!

Thanks for the comments Black! I appreciate your feedback. I did originally try to render the fur with shadows, but it crashed every time unfortunately. I ended up reducing the quality of fur (from 12 sided splines to 3 sided) and removing the shadows and it finally rendered, although not repeatably, it would still crash occasionally.

Excellent point regarding texturing the inside of the egg, I'll remember that one for next time

Thanks again!

Hmm, I want to enter... but my chair is really boring and plain. It's not even a real office chair, it's got four legs and it's wooden.

*looks at chair again*

Ugh, it's so boring.

Coming from the some one who has posted this guy I have to admit that I am very flattered.
I had a mind to post my first attempt. But your post sort of got me motivated to give it another try on some curvatures of it.

You'd probably come up with it eventually. But I am glad I was of some use

_ Lol..
from your avatar I was more than sure you were attending a classy 'Barber'.

I actually modeled it for fitting a chair to the renevation of the house and studio.
But it seems it is not going to be affordable.

Thank you Andoy..
you are always very kind

Wonderful entries from you guys!

I was really busy this week trying out different modelling techniques

This one took me 40 minutes modelling, 10 minutes texturing and lights and render about 10 minutes again. All in 3dmax 5.

Its a chair for Formel 1 mechanicals.
