Question moon beams???

recently been trying to make moon beams, for a small scene (actually for "runes" avatar)

was using volume lighting, with a projector map on the light, but it always turned out wrong, either the shadows were too dark, or the beams to faint.

is this the right way to go about this? is there a better way?
how can i fix it?

thanks in advance, pheonex
