Sometimes this is true... and sometimes this is not... for instance, your image would look a lot better had you spent you 60 minutes on modelling a whole scene for your painting. Like an art gallery with a bench... a sculpture or two... some fancy lights, a "frame" for you picture. Just a pretty .jpeg isn't going to do it without some type of creativity behind it aswell... Just my two cents anyway...

Exactly

@Marty

Exactly that's what I wanted to show...

Get me right. I don't want to offend anybody and yes, textures are great. A good modeler has to know when and where to use textures instead of modeling all kinds of stuff.

When I model (in a prof. environment) I carefully plan on what to texture or not. And I do this before and while modeling. I just wanted to clarify why I chose not to use textures on the locomotive... that's all.

After all, I've seen models on this forum that where very detailled and difficult to model but the rendering wasn't any fancy v-ray full textured one of a kind. And I've seen veeery easy models using shaders presets and textures and v-ray and stuff like that that catch the eye in a first glance but wouldn't stand the contest in a real production environment.

But I'm sure this has been discussed a hundred times before and I don't want to spread bad vibes =) Because after all this contest is all about fun and making a fast and good impression to the eye - which textures do. It just depends on how you interpret the task "speed modeling" - just modeling or in a overall impression way of doing things... then again one HAS to texture it to compete LOL

Jingle bells and merry christmas. Hohoho.

ps. everyone - go and see Incredibles if you haven't yet! IT IS IN-CRE-DI-BLE!!!

agreed that normally texturing is pointless in a modelling contest which is why we ask for wireframes etc. However, I'm reasonably confident that I can spot a crap model underneath even the greatest textures and that's how I try and judge the challenge every week.

this time though we decided to open up the challenge to include texturing and rendering, there were several reasons for this most notable being that it's nearly Christmas so lets have a little fun

Normal service will be resumed as soon as possible (maybe there will be once more week where we stary form the normal rules) so in the meantime take advantage of the changes and enjoy yourself

Okay Bobby, you beat me to it, your model is a little simple, but I didn't finish in time so yours is better ... I was trying for more realism (at least as real as he actually is hehe) and spent too much time (like 40 minutes just on his face) to get it done in an hour...Cheers, good job.

I got so mad at the mesh - I couldn't clean up the face after a boolean - that I deleted it! Sorry, but it was looking good, I'm just tempermental. I'm not a real Christmas person, so the "spirit" hasn't hit me...I don't even buy a tree ever...Just money I don't have. I think I'll just enjoy everybody's submissions from the bench

Vray is an external rendering system. Max 6+ comes with a renderer called Mental Ray. You can get Vray Free to test out the renderer, just look it up on Google.
