Lighting set up for vewiports on max

Good god this is annoying:

When I startup max and go into the matierial editro, the ambient light in the options menu is always set at wight and not black as the default states. First off how can I sort this so It is set to black all the time (even though max itself says the default is black it always comes up with white!) An by the way I deleted My maxstart.max file too to try and get rid of it to no avail.

Also, after I have manually changed the ambient light to black, If I apply a default material to an object ( the gray colour) when I render it it stills truns out very bright both in the veiwports and in the render, so secondly, how can I change whatever it is (annoyingly) that is making the scene very bright, or at least return max to its origonal state (even after getting rid of maxstart.max)?

So theres a few to get your teeth around.

in material options....unlock the ambient color and set to black...then hit apply......[important....do not lock it after you change to black].....then hit ok.
Close out max...and re-open it.....it should now be locked to black.

ps....not a good idea to start deleting core files

ciao
