speed modelling challenge week 27 - lego model

The "rules" are simple,

1, Each week we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for.

2, spend no longer than the specified time on the modelling stages then render the image.

3, Post the image here along with your details, software used, time spent etc. Please post only one image per entry with a maximum file size of 100k and with the maximum dimensions of 800x600. This image should include at least one wire frame view of your finished model. Posts with multiple renders of the same object will be deleted.

4, time spent on rendering or texturing is not included in the alocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure"

5, if your model is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognizeable

6, no cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modelling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive.

7, No limit to the number of entries each person is allowed as long as each one is a completely new model and not one that utilises bits of previous entries

8, No external links to pictures, they must be attached using the browse button and be no larger than 800x600 pixels and 100k. Any pictures larger than this or links will be removed as soon as we see them and the poster will be disqualified immediately

prizes of a 3D Total texture CDs to the best entrants. We'll judge it to avoid the voting process getting too complicated and winners will be notified by email.

so, here we go, with this week's challenge please note the deadline is for 2 weeks this time as it's Christmas and i really need to spend some time with my family and catch up with some of my paperwork and admin without work interfering (what's the bets that a client rings up on Christmas eve with an urgent job?)

We are going to do things slightly differently, this challenge is split into 2 parts, in the first section you need to model yourself a "lego set", once it's complete post it on the forum with a wireframe render as well as a solid, for this you are allowed 60 minutes modelling time.

the second section is where you get to build a lego model using ONLY the parts you created in the first hour. You may not model any additional parts or modify any already built components

deadline - 22.00 GMT Wednesday 29th December 2004

modelling time -

part 1 - 60 minutes

part 2 - 60 minutes

subject "lego model"

it's up to you what you make but be careful to plan ahead and don't forget to post a picture of your completed set.

so to sum up,

this challenge will take a total of two hours modelling time and it must be split into 60 minute sessions - no carrying time over from one to the other

you need to post 2 images, the first of your lego set as soon as you've built it with a wire frame included and a second showing your final model tere is no need to post a wireframe with this image

Good luck

Andy

Excellent idea.... I love Legos. I must ask one thing though... there are a few different plug ins for lego systems for various softwares out there... (I personally don't have any of them) are people allowed to use these... or are they to only create everything without the use of these plug ins?

Edit: H20 beat me to the question!

ooooh im so looking forward for every1's models!

good luck ppl!!!

*grabs box of lego...*

srry, i dont want to be a pain in the a$$. But i do have one question. Are you allowed to copy lego pieces? Or do you have to create more of the same piece? So like, when you are modeling ur second model with your lego pieces, are you allowed to copy some of them?

yes you can copy them as long as they are exactly the same block.

the "set" you make can include just one model of each piece

Very cool challenge indeed! I might participate in this one as well, ofcourse, if I find some spare time

Anyway, just to kick you off (this isn't and won't be my entry):

LEGO SYSTEM

Time spent on this one was about 3 days gross (incl. rendering time which was slightly above 10hrs). It's a bit old render of mine, but I thought you might have gotten inspired

Good luck to everybody!
