Question abouot SSS

Hi, I noticed that 3d artis among you all use this SSS(sub surface scatering) to make good tranlucent effect on ears, candle ect. Can some body tell me more about it and how do I get access in using trough 3ds max. I'm a max user. You information will be appreciated..thanks.
