My first try - Bugsy Malone car

Okay, this is my first post, and my first completed (ish) model

Being browsing through the forums and i have to say you guys are amazing - fantastic modelling and art work, and a supportive community with a refreshing lack of bitching.

So, this is my first major 3d project. I am more of a graphic designer than a 3d modeller, and I actually work for a school in the UK where I produce artwork and multimedia projects for students to use. This years school play was Bugsy Malone which I am currently producing a DVD of. For those not familar with the film, it is a 1920's gangster film starring a cast of under twelves. It also features cars, which are infact toy pedal version of the big gangster limos.

I am currently working on the intro sequence for the DVD and plan to have a cell shaded car chase between two of these machines

So I have produced this. There are so many things wrong with it I don't do where to begin. However, I have learnt from every single mistake, and the next model will be considerably better. The main body is made using box modelling and the cabin from splines. It was produced from scratch with no reference photos (a bit of a mistake that) so it is in no-way an accurate respresentation of anything

The final version will be cell shaded so a multi-coloured model will be produced and it will then be fed into After Effects where an edge detect filter. As a result, I have kept the level of detail down, and the textured version was only used to produce something shiny to go oooooh at, as the final version will need to use random multi colours for the filter to work

So any thoughts, criticisms or general "don't give up just yet"s would be appreciated

Oh, and thanks must go to Daniel Buck or www.danielbuck.net for his fantastic website tutorials, which got me on the right track

Thanks. The geometry on the doors is definatly messed up. I've not really got the hang of spline modelling. Still, it was better than my attempts to box model the whole car.

Thanks again for your kind words

Okay, for anyone interested, here is the reason that the lack of detail on the model is not important

One multi coloured render:

And the multi coloured render passed into photoshop for edge detection

It's rough and ready, but the idea works and i'll be able to use it for my animated chase

Hey, this aint that bad.
The first thing I ever modelled was this.Mine looks worse. I stole the textures from Mafia, and didn't even know that i could use symmetry modifier, so nothing is simmetric on it

reflection

The car paint is way to reflective. there is a great tutorial on the 3dtotal site that shows you how to create a realistic car paint. the model looks nice though.

Now that's just weird lorddarthvik. Same basic car shape and colour. And I was working off the top of my head. I'm going to have another crack at it this evening and try working from scratch. There are bits i'm rally pleased with (mainly the front 1/3) of the car, but there are a lot of geom. problems to fix. It will be fine for my current project where i don't really need to worry about reflections and textures, but i'm really starting to get into 3DS and want to start producing quality work

Thanks again for your comments
