Wrapping my presents

Im making myself a christmas scene with 3D Studio max 6, but am having some modelling problems. Would be awesome if someone could point me to a tutorial or give me some pointers.

What is the best approach to draw a ribbon around my gifts ?(So it looks realistic). Every approach I try comes out either rubbery, cartoony or boxy, I think Im just going about it completely wrong. I have a sneaky feeling that there is a way to model things, wrapped around other things in general, that I just simply dont know about. Any help will be well appriciated.

Season greetings from snowy Iceland

ok..whipped this out pretty fast.
It`s just splines-extruded-cloned.
The inner ribbons are just tubes.
The box ribbons are just the same box cloned and reduced in size yet slighly higher...hope this helps

ciao
