Not From Earth

Hello Threedy Members,
First of all I want to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a happy new year. Secondly: does anyone know how to create your own planet textures? for example i want to make a desert planet in 3DS MAX. Probably you all know that i'm working on a creation of the earth a few week now, but now i want to create a planet like Dune (Arrakis) from the film Frank Herbert's Dune. So i need to know how to create your own textures. If anyone could help me with this, i would really appreciate your help and information. Thanks, Novak.

This is easy. You can make this by using procedurals or mapping. In max you could add maybe a noise map in the diffuse slot and change the colors to browm. Then add a bump texture of maybe noise or speckle. Tweak the sizes. You could also go into photoshop and make one if you have photoshop. Goto filter-render-clouds and then filter-sketch-bass relief and you'll get a nice rock sort of texture. You can then change the hue/saturation. Also max has planet maps and you could blend a planet map with a dirt ground map. There are lots of ways.
