3dsMax 6 - Light Saber Glow

I am having trouble making a good glow effect on a light saber blade in max. I have only recently discovered how to make a glow effect on an object and not fully capable with the various ways to do it, attached is an image of the effect I want and the various effects I am capable of. As you can see from my attached image, I have similar problems with both my methods, though the effect is quite different. The width of the glow doen't diminish in the distance, the glow stops at the top and bottom (and presumably the sides) of the render and the glows overtake the original white beam. I made the white beam by making a 100% self-illuminated object with a fall off.
Please help.

You could use mental ray's glow shader (or an output map), and the glare shader. I have an example scene on my website where I used the glow/glare combo on a teapot animation (to see the animation click the info button below the image)

Anyway, here's the link:

That link goes to my Max7 sample page. However there are some glow examples on my Max6 page (just follow the links on the page above). But on those I don't think I have a sample scene where I used both the glare and glow together.

Thanks for the info, problem is I have no clue how to use mental ray. I'll see if I can figure it out though.
