OS for AMD64 + MAX6??
Hi everyone and happy new year!!
I ordered today my new PC, with the following configuration: ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe AMD Athlon 64 +3000 NVidia Gforce 6600 GT 256 DDR3 PCI-Express 1 GB DDR 400Mhz Kingston HD Samsung 120GB S-ATA The question that is driving me crazy is...which OS should I install?? I´m using Win2K, with no problems at all, but...does it take advantage of a 64-bit processor? I know Win XP-64 is still a headaching-beta version, with lots of things to finish, including hardware drivers... Should I try Win2003 Server? I read it has 64 bit architecture...but will it need specific frivers? are they easy to find? Does it worth it? I know maybe Linux would be the choice, but I´m not sure I can work with it...too used to Windows I´m afraid... I´m an Architecture student and a freelance 3D artist (I work with 3DMAX 6)...can someone help me?? Thanks a lot!!

Win XP-64bit is still far too buggy to use on an everyday basis.
I have a similar spec PC but had to opt for normal xp pro. Still runs very fast but Longhorn should be here soon so im just gonna wait for that. Its a shame that we cant use our 64 bit yet but not much we can do. I also use Linux Fedora Core 3 which supports 64 bit and is very fast! Dont use it that much cause im too used to windows. I would stick XP on it and hold out for Longhorn or at least a less buggy version of Xp-64 |

Stick with Win2k, untill longhorn or something better comes by. If you really have the itch to upgrade get XP pro.
Linux dosent support 3dsmax so thats not really an option if your a max user. 64 bit support isnt really there yet for windows but then it dosent really matter since 3dsmax dosent support 64bit anyway. |
