Why does 3d MAX version 5 keep quitting

Can someone help me out?
I have used 3D Max version 5 for about a year now with no problems.

Now when I start it up it opens the splash screen and goes through the initialising process. half way through the splash screen flickers white very quickly and it resumes the process. Then when it has finished starting up and you expect the workscreen to come up.................nothing happens.

I have tried going into the task manager and ending task for the cdilla. Then going back into Max and starting up again but still no joy.

I have tried right clicking on the Max icon and going to shortcuts in the properties and adding a -h at the end of the location text. In the hope that when I start the program it will take me to the graphics set-up. But it does the same nothing.

It's driving me mad.........can anyone point me in the right direction

Have you installed any plugins lately? Mighty have gotten an bad one thats crashing max.
