SPEEDPAINTING CHALLENGE nr.15

This week I think will be interesting...

'The heavy clouds hang just above the ruins of L.A. The buildings, previously enormously tall and shiny 'cause of all the windows were now just bent, miserable skeletons. The higher the building, the mode damage it received. What was strange was the border of the damage made - everything above 10 meters was destroyed, below that the buildings were intact. Well... intact by the explosion wave. The walls were destroyed by the explosions, darkened by fire. Some of them were covered by crude graffiti, naming this area "propretee of the Snakes's gang". Some of the shop windows were "repainted", some shattered. Garbage was lying everywhere, Some car wracks here and there. Almost impossible to imagine, that only 15 years ago the streets were full of people, cars and... life.'

Deadline - as always - week and a half - Wednesday the next week - February 2nd.

GO!

Yich. I'm so bad at this. It's my first painting ever, and I don't think it's looking too promising. Any scathing crits? I think this one's going to get blown out of the water.

Good point. I noticed that the colors and blackpoint will be way off on other people's monitors because my color correction is not quite tweaked right. I saw it because I started getting banding issues on the dark values, and realized that it was because I was operating within fractions of hitting pure 0,0,0.

I took out the sign because it's so pervasive. I'll work on some highlights next. Thanks!

well, LA is my backyard, so I guess I could scathe the concepts of a few of you... but that would be pointless, so go to google, see what the skyline looks like (there's no good pictures of any of the rest of the city there - Hollywood and Highland (shopping - huge), the library area, downtown shopping at 7th and Figueroa, USC, UCLA, Union Station, Olivera Street - I wish I had had my camera some of the times I've been up there). I guess with the clouds, the mountains in the background would kinda be obscured.

Go look at the pictures of LA on Google though, and see what the buildings in the skyline look like - the library tower, and the BP building (used to be Arco Plaza before BP bought Arco), and all the dozens of others. It's really not that big of a downtown area, not that many skyscrapers; go more than a mile north, you're into nice houses; a mile west, same thing; a mile east, "less desirable" areas; and south, there are warehouses and shipping yards mixed with apartments and sweatshops (worst area of LA), and then farther south is South Central LA and Watts. A map or ariel photo might help give you an idea.

(and graffiti here is seemingly unintelligible, recognizable usually only by having seen the same tag a bunch of times before; sometimes you can read it, but not tags typically - just scribbles. oh, and gangs go by street names a lot of times, like the 18th street gang (20,000 members strong at last count, or something like that - tied to (as in run by) the Mexican mafia).

I'll try to get something in. As far as destruction, I'll probably use the WTC photos for reference.
