How fast should my FireGL V7100 be?

This is a question for people using workstation graphics cards with 3ds MAX 7. I have a new FireGL V7100 and I'm not impressed by it's performance. I can only use the directX 9 driver with 3ds MAX, all other drivers, like OpenGL, make the card sluggish-- no faster than the bottom line Radeon X300 i upgraded from. And this lousy performance with open GL occurs in After effects as well, and any other open GL supported app.
My system is a pentium 4 Dell, not a xeon, but I expect more power from this top of the line card. In some cases, it will work as it should, and I can rotate 3 million polygons smoothly, but the fire GL should be able to really accelerate open GL rendering, should it not? I"m wondering what kind of polycounts other workstation cards are handling for people, in smooth and wireframe modes both.... anyone with a quadro fx 3400 or another FireGL card to compare?
