Question [3dsmax] Cant add joint deformer

I have a character which has a skin modifier (uses biped rig) and now that i have fixed all the envelopes there are few weird errors in the model when i try to animate it. So I would like to add some joint/angle/whatever they are called -deformers to make it look better. I do as the max tutorial says: i select the model, click the skin modifier, select envelopes and the wanted bone. Now the tutorial says that I would have to select the bone AND the wanted vertices too. How am I supposed to do that? I tried selecting first the editable poly and by there all the vertices I wanted. Now with all the vertices selected and the bone I go to the envelopes section again, scroll down and try to add the deformer - no success. The program says that i dun have any selected vertices. How can that be even though I DID select the vertices!?

Help newb

in your skin modifier there is also an option to select the vertices, it's right there under the "edit envelopes" button.

but before you move on to deformers I would tweak the skin by painting your vertex weights. it offers much more control than envelopes and a good painting job will fix a lot of those ugly deformations.
