Car Modellng Help

Hi guys, wondered if you could answer a couple of questions about car modelling which is stopping me from progressing.Im using 3ds Max

1-When i want to create something which looks like an indentation in the bodywork, how do i do this.By indentation i mean, the car being made of different parts has to connect to one another and this creates a seem between the two (i.e) the doors or where the bonnet meets the front bumper.Just wondering how everyone models theres.I have tried different techniques,One of them was an extrusion inwards and another was detatching the selected area. Some Wire frame images to see poly placement would be really handy

2-final question, how do u model windows,do you make the bodywork first or do you model the window as your going?again some wire frames would be welcome

thanks in advance

Hey man.

1. To create the seams between the body panels, do this:
-Cut the desired shape, like a door, a hood, etc.
-Detach that shape.
-Extrude the edges inwards a bit.
-Chamfer the edges that need to form the seem with a very small value.

2. You model windows the same way as with other panels like doors etc.

I'll get some wires for you now

Ok I made the wires:

Image 1:
Think of this plane as a part of your car.. I have some car models but well.. I couldn't really show how it was made since I used my own freaky seam techniques on them by creating solids of everything So I'll just use a plane.

Image 2:
I detached my 'door' and I hid it yes, that one poly is a door in this example

Image 3:
I extruded the outer edges inwards a little (I overdid it in this example to make it more clear)

Image 4:
I chamfered the edges. Afterwards I removed the tri's you see in the picture by welding some verts.

Image 5:
I did the same with the detached part. Extrude, chamfer.

Just throw a meshsmooth over both objects and the result will be similair to image 6. Keep in mind that I overdid all my settings in this example so the seams are really round. I used a chamfer of 1,0 so it would be clearly visable in the picture, I would use 0,001 or even a double chamfer when building cars.

With glass, you'd just trow a glass material on the detached object, no modelling changes.

Well, I'm off to sleep now, hope this helped. If you have anymore problems, don't be shy to ask 'em
