VS Challenge

This is a new VS challenge we will be having every 2 weeks. It isn’t for any prizes just for some practice and to learn from your peers. It can be up to 4 but no less the 2 people. I will give a subject then you and the other challengers will have 2 weeks to finish modeling the subject. All texturing, unwrapping, animating, etc are all optional if time allows it. This is just a modeling exercise to help show your technique and workflow to others as well as learning how someone else approaches the same subject. Also this is a good way to help you keep deadlines on short notice, very important in the real world.

There will be an inorganic and organic challenge every 2 weeks. If you would like to join please PM me with “VS challenge organic (or inorganic)” in the subject with what type you would like to join. It will be first come first serve.

This is NOT a “who is a better modeler” challenge. This is a healthy challenge to improve your self and others in the contest. So please no “that model is better than this model” just keep it clean and constructive with critiques.

I will provide the initial reference. But please feel free to find as much as you can on your own.

Any questions, comments, or suggestion please post in this thread.

Interesting choice Goat! Two weeks would really give us time to get all those details worked in...
Good luck guys!

Edit: Limion, I suspect he means only the Samurai 3000 Katana

can any of you read what the button does exactly (on the reference site)? it's written in red, but i can't read it.
-->nevermind found it. it locks/releases the scabbard.

btw can we, do we have to post WIP's or just the final thing?

I think Goat put it in the WIP section so we could post the progress
However I dunno if it's obligatory...

Hey guys I would like it if you could post progress in this thread. Just so we could see your progress and to see how you start a project. Also a buddy of mine has this sword so I'm going to try and get it, take some pics of it to give you some more ref. I'll try anyway.

Nice start Limion, I suggest you don't rush it so much. We have two weeks and it looks like you'll be done tonight . Take time to study the sword and plan your model, at least that's I how I find I usually get the best results . Also, don't forcefully use the "model-on-image" type method (which if I understand correctly is what you're doing with that profile shot) if the reference doesn't allow it. If you have a good understanding of how the object looks, you could just "free model" it (sorry for the lack of real modeling terms). Anyways, I'm just trying to help; I know you didn't ask for any crits .

What bothers me most about the reference images is that I can't seem to find an image of the opposite side of the hilt as it's shown in the pic Goat posted. I'm guessing the hilt is symmetrical on a horizontal slice plane, but I think we're gonna have to improvise some of the details...

oh man sweet. I cant wait to get started on this

EDIT: hey goat I have a request for refs if you are able to get the sword from your buddy. a back end perspective angle of the handle, and a front perspective of the handle. any others you can think up of feel free. Also good luck everyone.

EDIT2: just got another ref request, the underside of the handle by the handgrips, if you dont know what I mean then ill cirlcle it

heres a tiny update. just got part of the handle done. gonna do the handle before I move onto the other parts. So next update should hold most of the details in the handle.
