constraining objects

I am trying to figure the best possible way to have my character pick up an object and throw it. How do I go about animating this? Constraints? or what? Any help is much appreciated.

Using Maya 6.5

Hi, if no mistaken there's something like link constraint at Maya, which cause objects to inherit position, rotation, and scale of its target object.

*I don't know how to use Maya, this is something from Max which I think theoritical same with it.
