Look at the tutorial section of 3dtotal.com. Some for beginngers. May want to look at your software's help file also.
BTW....always state your software.

Nearly all software packages these days come with a selection of tutorials, Unfortunatly if you are like me i jumped straight in and wanted to be able to model a real nice character standing next to a ferrarri, then texture it perfectly and light it superbly and then finally render it immaculate. ( I thought i could compete with many pro's who had been doing it for years... straight off the bat )
It was only after a few weeks i decided to go back and study the actual manuals and software tutorials.

I would highly reccomend going through the tutorials that came with your software first, then you will have a basic understanding of the tools and interface.
Then move onto a few tutorials about thngs you enjoy .. be it cars or characters or something else.
But you will have a good basic knowledge of Modelling, lighting and rendering.
You did the right thing by asking for help here and i wish you all the best.

im using 3ds max 7 but when i try to open tutorials, it never launches, and the tutorials i find show you how to make things they dont teach you what each thing does though.
