Lighting Help

hi guys,i am a 3ds max6 beginner, i have a lighting question that i don't understand why. hope you guys out there can give me a light

here is the case.

the image above with only 2 Omi light, which is one omi Light is with "Ambiant only" and "Far Attenuation" is activate. For the second Omi light is only "Deffuse and Specular" with no "Far Attenuation" apply. as you can see, the shading was circle up is so soft and nice. this is what i expected.

here the problem is. This scene also with only 2 Omi light, one is with "Ambiant Only" and "Far Attenuation" is activate. For the second Omi light is with "Deffuse and Specular" with "Far Attenuation" apply too.but how come the shading was circle up was so sharp and hard?. i really dont' know why...any one can give me a light?
thanks

What types of shadows are you using, depending on the type you get a different quality of shadow.
Also, avoid using ambiant lights - while they do have a purpose, they tend to wash out the colors of the scene, and make things look "flat"

thanks PriestRidden for your reply. the omi light is only with "diffuse and specular" without any shadow.
