asian street punk

hello...I haven't touched 3d in a while but I've started up in maya this time!

I haven't done much but I'm trying to box model this time instead of the poly by poly technique (blah) and get the topology as nice as possible.

I took some time to actually plan out the character this time...the midpoint of modelling is due thursday, so hopefully tomorrow I'll have finished the body and head. And the full model is due next week...if anyone remembers how long it took me to just make a head the last time around... well, we'll see ^^

here is the concept, if you've ever seen Fruits you know how asian street fashion works...the weirder the better:

i haven't modeled the toes or the rest of the fingers, and the head is a bit small because it hasn't been touched yet.

maya's really easy to learn once you know like the main shortcuts and set up your hotkeys. some ppl were totally yacking on how crappy 3dsmax was though, and you could tell they'd prolly never used it...and i wanted to kill 'em

yeah the butt hadn't been touched because there weren't any edgeloops for the bottom, i did it a bit today but it's still off

so i just spent the better half of a day in a computer lab listening to a bunch of grown men giggle about +2 or whatever in magic, and "snipe him! snipe him!" and i was about to kill myself.

ok, i prolly just offended like the entire 3d population.

anyhoo, it doesn't look like much of an update but it's all quads and the flow is really nice and follows the muscles (and it took me forever)

still need to move around some points but this is prolly about how detailed the body is going to be (maybe some more detail to the arms and knees)

HP's back! rejoice! *silence*... hehe, j/k, your great people

I'm kinda wondering about the back topology... it doesn't look anatomically correct to me. I dunno, maybe if you posted a smoothed view without the wireframe it'd make more sence.

So what's the deal with this model? are you eventually going to rig him up and animate? or is this just some test?

pretty good so far, although I agree the back looks kind of off, especially where it meets the buttocks area. Also it is true that your not really going for low poly, but you have some polys in there that aren't doing anything. I would try to clean it up.

well, the back, i dunno, i sort of matched the muscles up to an anatomical chart so i dunno. they may be pushed too far in/out though...but i agree something looks fishy about it

i'm trying to clean up some stuff that isn't necessary like perhaps the abs and back area, i mean the guy doesn't have to be ripped or anything...we prolly won't even see his lower torso

i can't smooth it right now cuz i'd have to merge all the middle vertices and i'm just too lazy to do that ^^

the girl thread...bah, i have too much on my hands now to go back >.<

Hey! I like your concept. I've always enjoyed your 2d threads btw.

Well I can see by your last post that you are using maya's standard poly modeling tools. I've always found them to be....well...lacking. Not to worry though! There is a free mel script called connect poly shape. This tool is GREAT! It allows many things that are not in maya's poly tools, most notably switchable subdivison levels (up to 4) and mirrored instances (ie it mirrors your model, as well as any changes you make to the origional, along an axis.)

Any ways here is a link to download it: http://www.highend3d.com/maya/downlo.../misc/707.html

And no worries, it comes with a complete hypertext help file, and its own custom toolbars. I'm personally a Max user, but I migrated over to Maya for awhile. When I found that the poly modeling wasn't as good I found this scrip. It was like a breath of fresh air. Best of all it was FREE! Can't beat the price.

Hope this script help you! I know it sure helped me. Share the wealth and all. Keep up the good work!

hmmm i use a instance which does mirroring already and i use mjpoly tools and spin faces...i'm sure lots of ppl use these things but i didn't know spin faces until now and it sure helps to get all your lines to flow the right way by changing the line connection points. but i'll be sure to dl your script and try it out.

btw this is what the pants basically look like...these are my pair that i bought for kicks in taiwan, i'm not goth but the pictures are funny ^^

Well thats cool. Nice pants btw, the knees will NEVER wear out.

Anyways CPS allows you to throw a subdivision onto your model and mirror it instantly, you can switch it on and off, no need to merge whatsoever. It also maintains its own undo history. Its really alot like smooth proxy, except you can collapse it very easily when finished.

I must admit I've never heard of mjpoly tools, or spin faces, but admitedly I am an amature at Maya. When I used CPS, everything just clicked for me, so I recomend it to everyone I know who is using Maya.

I really like the look you are going for with this guy. Do you plan on keeping a gothic look with skulls, or are you going in a different direction.

Keep it up!

yeah that sounds like something i need, cuz merging vertices is a pain to me even though it only takes a minute.

this is just for a modeling class, so i might or might not texture it depending on time...personally i'm not into skulls and the only reason there are skulls over everything is because it's from a brand called mar jour that does this kind of cosplay goth look.

the head so far...some things need to be worked out, but the flow is pretty good...it hasn't been merged obviously.

i think the head is way too feminine for such a buff body. needs to be rigid. usually you don't see ripped guys with faces as tender as flower.
