Rigging a biped

I always make lots of errors and mistakes when rigging a biped. Nowadays I'm using Maya. And Again I'm trying to animate a walk cicle. I've already modeled a simple character and assigned some bones to it with rigid skining.
but I dont know too much about ik, ik splines, constrains. To sum up I'd like to Know how to use these items (ik, ik splines, constrains, hierarchy "e.g foot handle is parent of ik leg handle" ) to rig a biped. Could someone help me?
