VRay Glass01

Last three months has been continuous testing of differant software. I hade 3dsmax as my first choise, but tried to move to other, like maya, lightwave or XSI.

Today, my choise is still 3dsmax. But now i know how to work in Lightwave, 3dsmax, maya and XSI. I know how to use MR in xsi and maya, turtle in maya. FinalRender, brazil and vray in 3dsmax.

My artistic-creativity died more then a year ago (maybe two). Every night trying to think of something i could do, no ideas and nothing was fun. Insted of giving up, i read and tested stuff. About everything. Tested new software, differant approatch. This is one of many tests.

3dsmax8 and VRay. Render time 5-10 minutes, dont remember.
DOF is made post in Combustion, exported a z-depth map and used it as g-buffer. I never render dof. Hate the xtra render time

Anyway. My favo software is, after all testing. 3dsMax with VRay.....
Cheers

Btw
I just bought a new Sony monitor. Hard time to set gamma and color profile. Cant get it perfect. I had to update the pic after re-calibrating the screen once again, the pic was just "uber" dark

Looks pretty nice, I to oam a Max/Vray user - I don't think you needed to take it to combustion to DOF it, both Max and PS are good at it...But the results are nice...Why did you put the cloth under the glasses? Were you experiencing problems between the floor and the glass?

Hi Okron, i use combustion so i can get "true 3d" DOF, there is a few ways to do it in PS to, but not true 3d though. I tried Dof post inside max, but never looked ok. VRay can render very realistic dof, but it takes a long time...

The blue paper napkin is a Orean Nayer blinn shader, no gloss and absorbs light, high specular made it easy to store photons from the caustic that was emited from the scene. My purpose with this scene was to make nice caustic in vray. Prefered FR or brazil before, regarding caustic, or glass in general. Not anymore though.

Glass placed on "almost" black and reflective surface would make everything weird. So a technical solution to reach the look i was after. The glasses are to clean and reflective perhaps, maybe the caustic is to intense, but i like it like this

BTW! Render time was before i re-rendered, i had one glass in the scene. Now the render time is higher......
Ciao

Thanks agony I thought the caustic is great to. Not shure about the render though, still have problems with my screen. Calibration on my monitor seams like an everyday job. I gave my son a Taxan monitor, maybe iīll take it back and give him this Sony monitor insted?

I wanted to pore water in the glass using liquid dynamics, i used water dynamics before, but not poring liquid from one container to another. Could be interesting.
Anyway, thanks.

Amazing!
I wish I could see it without the napkin. Just curious about how it would work.
Explendid work!

Artistic creativity never dies.
It only falls asleep for a while sometimes and always awakes stronger and renewed.
We'll be waiting for that day to come for you.

Great work there! I personally like the napkin, I think it makes it even more photoreal, and gives it style somehow There is one small problem with the DoF though: there is no dof in refraction (especially noticable through the tall glass on the left side). Anyway, I think you did great getting such nice caustics and lighting! Keep going!

Btw, I'm on the other end of "artistic-creativity". I wanna do everything at once It's almost worse than haveing no "a-c" at all. But wait, you Have artistic creativity! Thats the napkin under the glasses

Thanks Carolina, yeah i hope so to, i worked as an leveldesigner before, making game levels, props and textures. Been working with asphalt roofing the last two years though, not so fun during winter time. Hurrr. Waiting for the day to be inspired enough to update my portfolio with some new artwork......

Yes ofcourse, i never thought about that, thanks for that info. I was just so happy about the great dof in combustion, and ultra fast cause itīs post. Hmm need to think of another way of doing it, could have "just" a blured refraction. Bake the refraction to a map, and set a blur offset, and everything would blend better together, maybe??

That needs testing.....
Thanks LordDarthvik

VRay with dof

I tried to use dof post, nah couldnt do it so it looked ok. Re- rendered, changed a few material settings and used vray dof. Looks great though.

Could be interesting to try the new final release of Maxwell
Cheers

looks nice....
I like your first image more and think it looks more "real"
I have to say that your background (HDRI ? ) looks a little to dark for the glass, its good in the floor because that is a dark rock surface, but the glass would "suck" the light and then reflect and refract it more... this would help get rid of those black reflections you have... if you look at a real glass on your kitchen floor you will see that it doesnt reflect large black areas ... you could try to just turn up your bounce rate that may let the light shine more in the glass... (thus brighting your background image)

To let them dry maybe? I set some dishes on the counter on a towel. If the floor was the only space clear, and a napkin was all you had..

I agree with the dark reflections, i tried to fix it with the material settings. Dof in combustion is super, real -time makes it fun to use. I like to be able to set a near plane and a far plane. Not realistic, but itīs easier to make it look nice. I had a "movie color" filter as well in combustion, last render had no post work. I think i could use a gloss mask, make it look like finger prints, dried out water drops etc. That mask could be used as a mask for refraction and reflection to ofcourse.

Yeah why put them on the floor?
Then i didnt have to model any furniture, just the napkin

I will give it a go once more.
