best to use some kind of post editing software such as premiere or something along that line. there are prob free ones somewhere if you do a search but i don't know of any right now.

3dmonkey is right, separate editing software is the best way to do it; it offers the most flexibility, features, and ease of use.
There is an easy way to do it with max in video post too. It doesn't offer many features (in terms of editing) but if all you want to do is put two avi files together, it works. If you would rather do it this way, just say so and you will probably get a quick response.

There are free editing programs out there, some of which are:
wax, avid free dv, windows movie maker, zs4, Jahshaka, many others.
but there isn't anything that comes close to premiere or vegas unless you pay. If you plan to do a decent amount of editing in the future, programs like these are a good investment and a good thing to learn. They do have trial versions available if you're interested.

for this simple task, i would recommend getting windows movie maker. its fast and simple, and will for sure import and export AVIs. but as noyb and monkey said, investing in editing software is very smart.

I use Combustion4, which is made by discreet so i guess it would be the most compatable for 3ds max. the interfaces are quite alike. i feel comfortable working with c4 at least...
