Plastic material and long render times.

Hi, i've recently obtained Final Render SP1. I really like it, unfortunately i'm very new to the world of lighting, rendering and materials. I just finished a model of the Nokia 6670, and from what i can tell, the buttons are a sort of clear plastic-type material.

I applied a shell material to my buttons, and made a plastic material to the best of my ability, it turned out looking good but it took over an hour to just render almost half of the image! I'm wondering how i could decrease the overall render time while achieving the same look. Any tips on how to do this, or to achieve a nicer lookin plastic material would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
