help with scratches and chipped paint

I would like to know how to set up a texture to show scratches in metal, chipped paint etc. Do i use masks ?

i have put some attachments from the gallery so you can see what i mean

You could make a texture with multiple layers in PS & create a bump map for it...

at its simplest you'll need to use a blend material with a mask of all the places you want to be the cracks. to add depth and complexity build up each blend slot using mix shaders in each for different color variations.

you could also go the route of using a composite shader. there would be a base material (your overall outside paint color) and then each mat slot would be a different mask of paint chipped away.
