meshsmooth help

Hi there,
Im modeling a car, and im having problems with meshsmooth. Im trying to keep certain areas of the model sharp, while still being able to meshsmooth to really high res.

Those parts should have sharp edges but not too sharp... if you know what I mean. Using smooth groups on the different parts causes the edges to be too sharp, and also causes other anomalies.

Could someone give me an idea as to what the best method would be?

Cheers

Max 8 btw.

Select the edges which need to be sharp and then chanfer them. Use a low value such as 0.2 And then apply meshsmooth. That will work.

Hi there,
Thanks a lot for the reply. I just tried what you mentioned and still no luck!

Heres a pic that shows the use of chamfer...

Thanks again.

EDIT: Been here for hours trying to fix this, slowly losing patience

Still cant get it to work, it seems I dont quite understand the way that chamfer works or something. Ive tried chamfering in many different ways, it either doesnt work, or causes strange overlapping areas etc.

Heres a picture of the unsmoothed mesh, with the edges that need to be square yet smooth highlighted.

As you can see from the other images, it oversmooths all of the square areas.

UPDATE: I got a little closer to a good results, however some corners still have errors...

Any idea how to prevent this?

THe the champher again, this time use 0.0 for the amount. That might do the trick.

I guess there is a problem with the wires. Post a wireframe image.

Cheers for the reply guys, I cracked it Thanks for all the help.

I had to create a 4 sided poly on the top edge there. You can see in the second image of my last post that I stupidly had a 3 sided corner

Cheers
