my suggestion if you are just starting out in 3d would be to not make the mistake that alot of people make and try to start with a very complicated model like a body. It will just get you frustrated. I would suggest you start with more nonorganic forms and tutorials. Get your basics understood first and you will get alot more from it when you are ready to model organic forms and not have developed any bad habits because you are trying to do something above your beginning level.

If you still want to start with a body i would suggest a more cartoony one rather than realistic. Just trying to save you lots of headaches and discouragment.

There are several greate tutorials on the 3dtotal website by the way you should definately check those out.

3dmonkey makes a good point

tis best to start out with inorganics (3dpalace has an awsome dreadnaught tutorial)

but if you want to go straight to modelling people then check out the joan of arc tutorial, conviniently located right here on 3dtotal!

one tip i have for you is to model in halfs, using a smooth proxy mirrored to the other side to get an idea of the high res version and editing the low poly version respectivly

i find the best base for the body and its limb is an 8 division cyclinder

of course this is all just personal preference, in the end you ahve to find a method thats right for you
