Dino Hunt - Looking for 3D/2D Artists and designers!

Team name
Fallen Games

Dino Hunt [working title]

Brief description

In an alternate timeline, around the year 1870, the hunting elite of the world were bored of the
mundane trips to Africa and Asia, bagging yet another antelope, elephant or even (yawn!) tiger.

A number of extremely wealthy individuals formulated a scheme. Inspired by the recent discoveries
of bones apparently belonging to enormous prehistoric beasts (so called Terrible Lizards) they
undertook to employ the genius of Dr. Claus Mordus to bring some of these species back to life - so they
could kill them.

Dr. Mordus - expert biologist, physicist and all round madman - worked tirelessly for many years, but finally
several species were ready to repopulate a series of islands and other tracts of land. He even managed to
find ways to accelerate the growth and breeding rates of the creatures. Amazing.

Finally the rich hunters had some animals worth killing again - and the technologists in their employ
had been busy too, coming up with a number of new weapons and tools.

Join one of the small hunting groups to seek out (and bring back the heads of!) the largest, fiercest and most
terrifying creatures ever to roam the Earth! Again!

[just a rough background story outline]

Genre:

FPS hunting sim (mod/TC using Unreal Engine)

Setting:

Mid/Late Victorian era Steampunk. This implies 'high tech' weapons but based on old
styles. Similar for clothing and vehicles.

Gameplay:

You alone or a small group will go out into the wild and pit your wits against Velociraptors,
T. Rex and the terrifying Stegosaurus (seriously, have you ever SEEN one?!). First you have to find them,
then you've got to kill them. And that ain't easy. Depending on the dino you may only get one chance,
they're pretty damn tough and if you annoy them - you'll be on the menu! As a human you're extremely
easy to kill, so relying on stealth, paying attention to sound, scent etc. is important.

Points are gained for kills, with various bonuses/penalties for use of various aids (e.g. scopes or scent bombs).

The world is populated by a variety of other creatures, some of which the dinos feed on. A whole
ecology exists, which goes on even if you aren't there (and can cause major problems if you spook a group of compys!).

Graphical Style:

I imagine a fairly bold style, perhaps similar to WoW styling, with fierce, meaty looking dinos
and weedy humans

Target Aim

Free TC for Unreal Engine (initially for UT2004 but ported to UT2007 as and when).

Compensation

Voluntary and for fun only.

Technology

Unreal Tournament 2004 initially - ported to UT2007 as and when feasible.

Art assets can be built in whatever tools are desired, obviously using UnrealEd in the final case
to import to engine.

SubVersion for source/asset management (server provided).

Talent needed

Initially I'm just looking for collaborators to throw some ideas around, but anyone is welcome.
If/when the project does start up we'll be looking for the following. These are not necessarily separate jobs,
but you'll know what categories you fall in.

Concept Artists - Inspire us with drawings or paintings!

3D Modellers - capable of weapon/equipment (1st & 3rd person), human, dinosaur and/or flora modelling

Texture Artists - working with modellers

2D Artists - GUI, misc artwork

UnrealEd Mappers - The levels will be very large, with lots of opportunity for intersting outdoor areas, ruins, woods etc.

UnrealScript Programmers - Need people who know (or are willing to learn) UnrealEngine, can do animal AI (various behaviours like hunting, escaping, attacking, feeding etc.), weapons, game structure - basically everything needed for a TC.

I'd also like to hear from anyone interested in helping out on the design work, play testing or just generally
telling me how much the idea sucks!

Team structure

Currently the team is me. I'm a proficient programmer in a number of languages and know the UnrealScript language, but I'm still not up to speed on the ins and outs of the Unreal Engine. There will be no formal structure, although I expect to have to take on the project management role along with coding.

Additional Info

Obviously this idea is inspired by the (brilliant) game 'Carnivores' which came and went with little
fanfare. I aim to build on that game, with better graphics and dino behaviours.

At the moment the idea is mainly a concept and I'm fishing for feedback on whether to go ahead and really
get stuck into making this. If it does go ahead I envisage at least 9 months development time, although
with the UnrealEngine we should have visible, playable content very quickly (indeed, I've already got
some skeleton code working, although 40ft high Nali Cows aren't that threatening ).

Thanks for taking the time to read this and comment!

Sounds interesting... You forgot to speak about sounds...
I might lend you a hand on modelling and/or programming (I don't know the UnrealScript but I'm a proficient programmer in C++, Java and Pascal so I think I can learn UnrealScript without problems)...

Hi, thanks for the response!

Yeah, you're right I did miss out audio, but this being mostly a graphics forum I figure it doesn't make much odds

I'll email you. Would you also pop along to the forums and say hi?

Cheers

UPDATE:

We've been busy creating revised designs, models and code! The first signs of dinosaur intelligence have been seen so why not stop on by the forum and find out what we've been up to - download and try out the test version of the mod!
