maya poly smooth problem

I have this problem and i can't put my finger on it. I'm new to poly modeling but i think i've grasped the basic concept. However, smoothing a poly in maya (6.5) does not seem to work for me.

I've reduced the problem to the very basic to explain. On the left there is the basic 1*1*1 poly cube.

Next I extruded one face in x.

And then I took the two top surfaces and extruded in y.

When i then smooth the poly i end up with something that has two tits, instead of one smooth shape. How do i keep the upper part together?

thanks,
Schmauli

Try this

Hi,
when you extrude faces switch extrude tool to "keep faces together" mode and before smoothing donīt forget "merge vertices" (select object-edit polygons-merge vertices)...so good luck!

bye...

Well, I've been searching my @$$ off for an option like 'keep faces together' but haven't been able to find it yet. It certainly isn't in the Edit Polygons>Extrude Face>optionbox.

As for the merging of the vertices, this leads to some distorted smoothing.

Ah i found it: for the sake of everybody else who encounters this problem;

On the bottom of the polygon menu there is a tooloptions option wher the faces can be kept togethre.

Cheers
