Question Animating a 6 legged character ???

I'm trying to animate a 6 legged character and I'd like to know how to do it. It's pretty hard to animate the feet and I haven't succeded so far to do something acceptable. I'll look later at my Monsters inc dvd but for now I don't have access to it...

Thanks but I think your animation is not entirely good, this is not the way a 6 legged creature moves, the principle is that 3 legs support the body while the 3 other legs are moving.

let's say:
.1....2.
3......4
.5....6.

1, 4 and, 5 stay at the same place (supporting legs)
while
2, 3 and 6 move (to make it advance in a further action)

then the numbers are inversed and we can do a loop

But to someone have an idea how the legs react when the character turns ?

I know if you get the Lots Of Robots DVD( www.lotsofrobots.com ) , on it one of the tutorials shows partially how he animated the robot millipede in the short.

I can't remember exactly how he does it but it was something to do with scripting, basically he just did one section and has the next one the same but slightly offset so that it looks like a caterpiller\millipede walking.

I'll dig it up and watch that tut again to see how he does it. It's worth the money if you can get it.

As for turning, I'd assume it's like a tank in that the side you want to turn toward just moves slower. So if you want to go right you slow down the right legs or maybe just speed up the left.

Seems cool but I don't have 25 bucks to spend on it just to learn that...

Yeah and it doesn't really go into exactly how he does it but there's enough to figure it out. I'd say it's more of a general kind of resource than a specific step by step, I think you learn more that way rather than just having it all spelled out.

I'll watch it over the weekend and see if I can't rig a mini-tut up.

well then try that one it is one of max3 scenes, and it matches your needs but I did not like it very much because I do not think that 6 legged creatures walk like this I mean the way u have said !!

This one look really cool but it's more the centipede way of walking. It's really cool though. Maybe you are right, maybe I am, I'll take a look at it. Don't take it badly I just wanna be sure... And there dont seem to be any walk cycle available on the web for that kind of creature...

Well of course, I won't take it badly it is just a viewpoint no more no less !! so it could be right or wrong and I thought that because I still can not imagine how could such creature walk so fast with this hierarchy!! so keep looking and I'll check some buggies in my neighborhood as well, they r a trustworthy giude

I think your best bet is to go find a spider or millipede, let it run around on your floor and examine it under a magnifying glass.

Or, of course you could skip the magnifying glass and get a tarantula

Another option might be to watch 8-Legged Freaks.. lots of realistic animated spiders there...
