... bananas; grab the Tapperware of the kitchen shelves, and perform a percussion-only symphony.

Alternatively you could look fo a local band interested in seeing their work as a soundtrack of an animation.

recording/gathering music for artwork is always a tricky one - you alone know what you want but very often artists don't have the technical knowledge or skill to write/perform or worse communicate what they want to someone who can.

I'd check with your friends - see if any of them can play an instrument and get a very rough track recorded, then you have something to work with.

If it's a dance track you are after there are loads of software packages that make music creation on a very tight budget an absolute breeze and usually come with thousandsof royalty free samples that will loop perfectly - think of them as seamless textures for music.

have a look at Dance ejay - there are others but that one is up there with the best of them.

So, how would I spend my "limited budget" I'd buy a case of beer, sit down at the keyboard, get the guitars out and record that killer track - but I've already got the software and hardware to do the job I suggest you spend yours on software rather than beer

Andy definately has a point - trying to explain to someone through email the sound you're after might not be worth the hassle? If I was you I'd take a look at ejay, if no go spend a while at Audiogalaxy or one of the other sites and listen to a few songs - you never know there might be a song hosted there that's exactly what you're after!

Thank you all for the replies.
Kit: I did.at school. It sucked, but I can do a mean rendition of "Fur Elise"!

Goig!: My 9month old drowns out my weak percussion attempts bangin her rattle on pots'n pans. I will look into the band thing though.

jbw: Thanks.

Andy_k-3DT: Communicating to the musician what I need and getting him to play what I want is indeed a problem. Dance music on somthing like fruity loops would have been easier, but I my need is somewhat more specific.

A friend of a friend records for radio commercials. I will give him a try.

BTW, anybody know of anyone getting sued for using commercial music on a demoreel? This was suggested on another forum.

I'd love to use some commercial music and I always find myself dreaming up the odd animation to a track. I doubt they'll sue you more likely they'll give you a warning asking you to remove it from your reel - if they ever find out!

Seriously though I don't think it's right to just use it - I'd be pi**ed if I saw one of my models in your reel and you hadn't asked.
If there is a piece of music you like it might be worth getting in touch with the label company. I really don't know how likely it is they'll let you use it but you've got nothing to lose. Let me guess the other forum told you to add the artists name in the end credits... cos that'll make it alright.

Exactly right jbw. On someone using my work without asking and simply adding my name at the end would not fix it.

Just a question here. If your using a song from somewhere do you need to ask the artist permision to use it? Like for a fun animation? or is that just paying occations.

goj,

i'm pretty sure you should ask for permission if you're ever using some peice of art that you didn't create. however i must admit that for my demo reel i didn't do that i took music i liked and just composited on top of my animations. this was not right however i felt that the distribution of that reel was not wide enough to really get enough attention. i also credited exactly what i used in both my animations and in the docs describing them. best i could do i guess.

if your under 18...

steal the music and sell your video for free! That way you can't nailed get that bad and your under 18 so that always helps when leading a life of crime! Or you could go to the great composers i.e mozart, grieg, a good one is slave marche, or in the hall of the mountain king, or you could ASK bands or get music form games. I am sure someone would say yes. Look into my eyes.
