Speed Modelling Challenge 123 - Shopping Cart

The rules are simple

1, Each week we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modeling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive.

How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief will be removed and the poster disqualified.

2, You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries. Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified.

3, Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like but it must include a clear and easy to see wire frame of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Please use a screen grab. No other method is acceptable and any "wire renders" or wireframes we can't see properly will be removed and the poster disqualified.

4, You must include the following details with each submission: software used and time spent creating the model. Any further information is voluntary but posts not containing the required information will be removed and the poster disqualified.

5, Post only one image submission per entry which must be no larger than 800x600 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 100k. These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page. Do not link to external images files. Larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials) will be removed and the poster disqualified.

6, The creation of displacement maps, normal maps and any splines drawn out in an external program other than your modeling software are to be included in your modeling time.

7, Time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the allocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognizable.

8, Posting the same entry twice in a challenge will result in a disqualification. When asked to fix a previous post due to DQ or any other reason, you must fix the first post, or delete it altogether and create a new one.

These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions

Time limit - 60 minutes
Deadline - 22.00 G.M.T. Wednesday 15th of November 2006

Nice starter and nice to see the SMC's back, but i thought the whole reason they were suspended would be so that the attatchment issue is resolved, i did come on here yesterday and the site was down and detailed about maintenance going on, but as with the starter it's a link.

I'm not having a go or anything, i totally understand that these things take time, i was just wondering, is this attatchment problem a really bad problem or is it a really tricky bug in the code. I'm quite happy to post entries as a link until were all fixed, it's just i thought that's why we had the suspension

I think i'll be in for this one, i'll try to find the time, i'm currently working on a few book cover design for my home business, and i've also started building a fairground model for a contest so it's all go lol.

Just happy to have SMC's back

Kind Regards

Classic Gamer

Yeah, there are still issues with the image uploading. Here's an update from a post I made in the Mods section.

Vbulletin software and mysql has a limit on table and database sizes, in the case of the attachments one it is set to 4gb ansd we have used all but about 40mb of that space now you'd think that if we pruned attachments and all the old threads that would release some space - well, I tried that today and no change, it maybe that the database is corrupt, it may be a bug in the system it may just be something we have to work around. We can do that, but we need to get the hosting company to turn off safe mode on the server and allow attachments to be saved direct to the file system rather than the database. This of course opens up a couple of security issues so it's something we need to look at carefully.

I reopened the forums until we get answers from all the relevent tech support guys.

Cheers

Andy

Well thanks for the heads up, update then Marty

Another point, rashika said said a real shopping trolley/cart in metal would be hard to do? well the way my mind's currently working it out, once you've modelling the overal outline shape the basket as it's known, then for the mesh lines, i'd personlly use splines but only about 2-4 and then instance or array or duplicate those splines around the shape, the total time to do something like that would only take about 24 mins to my knowledge anyway that's how i'd go about it, then all that's left to do is make the handle, and the wheels. i reckon i can just about get that done in the 60 mins, i'm gonna try anyway.

I might even try one with jet thrusters attatched for the faster shopper!!!

Kind Regards

Classic Gamer - 3D Shopping Cart Entry #01

OK here's my entry

Modelled In Cinema 4D i started off with the bucket the most poly intensive part of the shopping cart, what i did was shape a primitive cube to the desired size and dimensions, and gave it a fillet of 8 before making it editable. Once editable i went into point mode and held down the shift button to make knife cuts along the horizontal and vertical sides of the cube, this then gave me all the squares i needed, i then selected all of the squares that i wanted gone, inner extruded them by 1 and extruded inwards the outwards and deleted the selection. then for the curvature of the basket i used a taper deformer at the end of the cube and hey presto! the support rails were all splines made the usual way, and the wheels consist of a primitive cube shaped and a primitive cylinder shaped for the wheel. the cart handle is just a primitive cube with hypernurbs to smooth it out.

I do hope the wireframe is ok, this is the downside to the amount of knife cuts placed in here, the mesh does look a little clutter, but all meshsmoothing has been turned off.

I really hope everything looks ok, the 800 x 600 was a tricky size for this entry this time round for some reason.

The new entries are looking good, keep them coming guys

Enjoy

Kind Regards

Classic Gamer

First entry for me too!!
Software used: 3dsMax + mental ray, modelling time 50mins, I've made the classical child cart but maybe my next entry will be a 'professional' one :P

http://img234.imageshack.us/img234/9...percompek2.jpg

@diabolos: good work! I wanted to model that too, it's the first shopping cart found by google :P ... then I've chosen another one as a base...
@classic gamer: good entry, you can buy a lot of things with it!! :P very well modelled and rendered.

Informations for the judgement:
The wire is almost clean, some edges are chamfered (even you can't see it in the image) cause I've applied a meshsmooth as always. Those black areas in the wire are because I have some problems with my viewport on the notebook.

P.S. Marty please check my entry, it should be 100k!!

Thumbs up

Great topic!

My first (and very likely the last) entry comes here:

3ds Max 8, VRay
modelling time - full 60 min (and it still isn't ready)
materials - 30 min
rendering (including test renders) - 50 min (this is my second try with vray, so I had to do many test renders...)

Modelling is extremely simple: basicly about 15 different renderable splines which I've been copying around...
