Rushing generally leads nowhere. Its kinda hard to learn anything when you are rushing, even more 3d, which requires a lot of attention. For character modeling, you should take some time to learn anatomy, untill you have a STRONG base on how bodies are made, even before jumping into your 3d app, otherwise your characters will always look wrong, too blocky, disproportioned, etc, etc. Of course even with the knowldge from anatomical reference you will have to mess up several models to get a good grasp on the modeling techniques, so don't let this discourage you, because nobody learned this overnight.

I find muscle diagrams to be very useful, and you can find several of those on internet, for example here. Thats an excellet site to gather free reference material. Another wonderful tut on human modeling here, and some videotuts for lowpoly modeling that can be useful as well for high poly base meshes here. Buying some anatomy/modeling books can´t hurt, as well as tuts such as the eva wild dvds that you can buy from 3dtotal (there are samples that will give you a quick glance of how it is), and the freedom-of teach one.

Appart from this, the best you can do to really learn properly is to not try to run before walking. That will only get you to tons of wasted time fixing several mistakes that you overlook for rushing. I hope this helps.

Well thanks.

At the moment I'm modelling cos I just love working in max, I have no plans on becoming a pro at this s**t. Also I thank that character models don’t have to be 100% a clone of the real thing, there's to many people trying to clone the real world.
