Speed Modelling Challenge 124 & 125 - Cars

The rules are simple

1, Each week we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modeling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive.

How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief will be removed and the poster disqualified.

2, You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries. Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified.

3, Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like but it must include a clear and easy to see wire frame of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Please use a screen grab. No other method is acceptable and any "wire renders" or wireframes we can't see properly will be removed and the poster disqualified.

4, You must include the following details with each submission: software used and time spent creating the model. Any further information is voluntary but posts not containing the required information will be removed and the poster disqualified.

5, Post only one image submission per entry which must be no larger than 800x600 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 100k. These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page. Do not link to external images files. Larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials) will be removed and the poster disqualified.

6, The creation of displacement maps, normal maps and any splines drawn out in an external program other than your modeling software are to be included in your modeling time.

7, Time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the allocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognizable.

8, Posting the same entry twice in a challenge will result in a disqualification. When asked to fix a previous post due to DQ or any other reason, you must fix the first post, or delete it altogether and create a new one.

These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions

Time limit - 90 minutes
Deadline - 22.00 G.M.T. Wednesday 29th of November 2006
Subject - Cars

Cars: We all like Pixar movies... don't we? I hope so, otherwise... what are we doing here? Ok everyone... this challenge hails it's inspiration from the movie Cars. Cars, trucks, trains, planes... if it lives in the world of Cars... you can make it.

Have Fun and Good Luck!

My Starter:

Cars

Oh Yes!!! i can see this fortnights SMC is gonna be a popular one!! i'm definatly in for this, i've been looking for an excuse to model a cartoon vehicle!!!

Love your starter too Marty, the render could do with a little more work, not you're usualy high standard for rendering, but the modelling is what counts and that's spot on!

This is gonna be great.

Good Luck to all who enter!!!

I love Pixar!

Kind Regards

Yeah... sorry for the render... it was a rush job as I was really short on time today. Maybe I'll take a stab at another render soon.

this one is a lot interesting, especially for me as in my past few months span of 3D experience I didn't modelled any Car yet 'coz I've been too enthusiastic learning human modelling, but now due to this S.M.Challenge, I feel like modelling the first one.
May be modelling a quick design clears my idea to model a detailed car that I wanted to.

I'm surely trying this one, Marty thx for those 30secs more

Well i've already chosen the character i'm going to attempt to model (emphasis on attempt too lol)

I'm going to try and get Tow Mater done in the 90 mins, my texturing sucks at the moment, as i've lost a lost of my own made shaders, but i'll see what i can come up with.

I'm definatly going to have to approach the modelling of the car like i would modelling a normal 3d car, just because it's a cartoon one i don;t think i should think about it any differently, so i'll be modelling everything in half, and then once i've got a certain way i'll slip everything in the symmetry null and hope for the best!!!!

Also if i get time tommorow i'll try a model of my own, i rather like the hippy camper van in the film who knows.

Best of luck everyone, and i'm really excited to see everyone else's models

Kind Regards

Quick Question:
I haven't watched the movie but i've seen the characters so I know the style.. But...
Can we make cars (Etc?) that are stylised in the style of pixars but not in the movie? I think thats what Popo was also saying.

As my starter shows... you are more than welcome to make your own creations inspired by the movie Cars... but no, it does not have to be an existing character. But... it must be something that "lives" in the world of Cars. I hope that clears things up a bit.

Classic Gamer - 3D Cartoon Cars SMC Entry #01

Well here's my first attempt then, this was really cutting it fine to be honest, luckily the hypernurbs/meshsmooth helped things out alot here for this model. I started making the front cab from a primitive cylinder, made it editable then made several extrusions and knife cuts along the way, the windscreen was then extruded from the top of the mesh already created. the trailer was made from a primitive cube with a 12% fillet and again a few extrusions and knife cuts for the wheel arches. the hazard lights on top are just primitive cylinders and the wheels are 1x primitive cylinder and 1x torus for the tire, then i copied it, and then placed everything under the symmetry object null. I hope this explains a little bit more about how i went about creating this model. Now that i've done it, i know where i went wrong and how to make other models like this for future attempts. The render is nothing special, and again my texturing really really sucks, but i was more focussed on trying to get the cartoon style of the car created. there are a fair few things wrong with my model, and unfortunatly i could'nt create the pickup crane on the rear trailer, but it's not too bad for a first try.

I hope everything is ok,

Enjoy

Kind Regards

Classic Gamer
