realistic edges

I notice that to obtain a realistic effect is a good way to use edges a little bit smoothed.
I'm working with MAX5 and i've tried with the modifier MeshSmooth but it works only with simple shapes like boxes. I there a way to smooth only near edge ina more comlpicated mesh? Thanks.
P.S. I added a image because i'm not sure i explained well...

if you're workin with polys, something i do is select every edge and do two chamfers on it. each one at very small distances. that lays down 4 edges for you very very quickly and if its not a big deal to further edit the object into something more complex it should hold up really well with a meshsmooth.

good luck
