Consider going to your local library and looking for Inspired 3d Short Film Production by Jeremy Cantor and Pepe Valencia. ISBN 1592001173. It's worth looking for. To paraphrase, they say the first step is to get an idea on paper and get a storyboard so you know what you're going to finish at. Then you can start planning step 1 of production. Good luck!

another thing you want want to do is start small. 3ds Max has a lot to it and you wont be able to master it all. So don't think that you will. If you have a big idea, save it for later. Trying to go big for your first project, will overwhelm you. It might even make you change your mind about 3d all together. So start small, do a few little animations/models. When you feel good about where your at, bring out that Storyboard GuyBlue was telling you about.
