3dsmax 5, Male Body help..

Im still very early into this, but im working on defining the pecs, and Im having the hardest time. This is my first model of a human body ever, and Im quite new to 3d. Im attaching several Images to see if you can help. It seems as if adding detail seems to make the edge of the pecs all jagged and unconforming. This is really bothersome.

[High res]

perhaps you should try going through some of the joan of arc tutorial hosted on 3dtotal.com. i think maybe going through a bit of that while thinking about your model will help you with some ideas on how certain aspects of physiology could be constructed.

good luck

I've been through that, i think my wire frame gets screwed up in the smoothing, here is what im talking about..

See what i'm talking about, all i did was move the lower center cest vertice up, and it gets all jagged, i tried adding 2 edges, and then 2 vertices to the inner sections the 2 edgest created and pulled them down as the other went up, i need to get an almost rounded look out of the pecs, and it seems the more detail i add, the flatter it looks, i want to get a semi-real look.

Dude it looks like you need more time and detail, the biggest thing here is there is no crease down the middle of the pecs, you'll need moe than one edge in there to define two seperate pectorals. Rounding the corners of the muscle with some chamfers will make it look more organic too. Hope that helps

Yeah, I managed to add more chest detail, can someone give me advice on defining this, im really inexperinced, this is my first model. I redefined the chest, i figured out that i had to many vertices in to many places for it to smooth correctly.

[Hi-res wire]

[Low-res wire]

should I add one more edge then make the center edge-less and round everything according to that? I know it's super low poly right now :\ I might change that soon. And sorry for rendering in black earlier it's a pain to look at i know.

Alright..... I've gone an redefined the chest.
It's actually a step back.. I noticed one problem that was occuring, to many triangular faces, Quad seems to smooth, better.
here is the updated wire..

[low-res wire]

See some apperent problems, I do, yet i dont exactly know what todo to fix it..

A word of warning: you should try and avoid using anything other than four-sided polygons for a smoothed mesh. Using triangles as you have is most likely the reason it isn't smoothing as you would like. Of course triangles are unavoidable in some places, but its best use mostly quads if you can.

i think another good tip to try to think of those edges on your low res model as contour lines of the body. right now some of the edges seem pretty straight and boxy. the more you make the low res model look like countours of the hi res one the better i think it will smooth to something you like.

yes, yes.. I consulted with an art teacher at my school, she said i did a very good job for no reference material so far, she instructed me to look at reference pictures and antomy books. Which i will. And 3d max made an error and had to shutdown, and I did'nt use the crucial technique of save often so i'll start over now.
[UPDATE]
Alright, i had to start from over from that very first wire frame you see uptop, rendered in black.. I seemed to redefined the chest a bit differently this time, i studied the model and it seemed that the chest was'nt forming in the correct places. here it should be now. It looks a lot better, i havent botherd with the stomach yet, its too long.

My mistake....
I found out what had gone wrong apperntly some verts went inside the model and screwed it up, so i fixed it...im still having a lot of problems defining a lot of it..
Do you people need any more from me? if so just ask.
