What is the model based on (human, ape, mother in law etc.)?
Are you using references?

It's not Baaaaaad. If it's based on a really ugly person.
I suggest; - Get some good reference pics of heads, and the poly-flow of head models. - Follow some basic tutorials for pointers, and develop your own workflow from there. 3dtotal have heaps of tuts for people wanting to model human heads. Don't give up though, we'll walk you through it.

It does look like human,it's just that the mouth has that "monkey" shape
. Why did you pull that edge above the upper lip so much inwards? I think I know what you were trying to make, but this line doesn't go under the nose. It should start/end above the nostrils actually. Check out Robbie Williams or Bruce Willis photos to see what I mean ![]() The nose could use some more work as well, the nostrils to be exact. Make an extra loop in that area to give them a better shape. The eyes look odd. They are way too wide and out of shape. Check out your own eyes in the mirror, this is how I learned to make them properly :P And define his jaw a little more ![]() EDIT: wow, cool it's still online... Check out THIS TUTORIAL !! It was a great help when I was using MAX for modeling It's a "must-have" tutorial for anyone who is trying to make a realistic head IMO. I also suggest completely remodel your head after you watched the video ![]()

I pulled some images of google.
The front and side images where not set right so I had to make do. Ya the nose could do with some work, I found the nose the hardest part to model. The mouth just headed the wrong way... I have a habit of part modeling and just free styling if you can call it that, I kind of get bore following an image. In the end I guess It end up part man part ???... Thanks for feedback Aleksandr Kir and that link... Last edited by Pixelgen; 10-04-2007 at 12:10 AM.. |

Pixelgen: Well, it's actually a good thing that you model the head in parts, but the thing is,you have to check every now and then how they look together.
The nose isn't as hard as the ears :P It took me about six times to model them correctly and the funniest thing was that they were too high poly, so I couldn't attach them to the head no matter how I tried... Had to remodel them once again lol... Honki: No worries ![]()

Once again thanks. I have this habit of doing a half assed model that is incomplete and posting it. I’m going to start out again. Had a look at your female head model, great work by the way. As I spend most of my time pressed up against female heads I might as well use that understanding of the female beauty and try my hand at making something stunning. You don’t happen to have any good images of female heads front and sides I can use ??? as I only have a phone to take snaps on and cant seem to find any good free sites... Edit: my god, that VTM is a waky way of modeling. But it seems to work, dont no if I'm able to model at such a speed but I'll try LoL. No but really it so different to want I've been doing. I tend to model the eyeslids and then move on to the mouth, cheeks and chin, and then the nose before rounding it all off. Last edited by Pixelgen; 10-04-2007 at 11:18 PM.. |

The Joan of Arc tutorial uses some good ones.
Also, check out http://www.the-blueprints.com That site has a few good references.

Pixelgen: Well,if you want to improve then you should post your unfinished models here
It's better to change something when you are on early stages rather than completely remodel the whole thing ![]() Unfortunately I don't have any female references you could use. I started that project in MAX,using references from one of the tutorials for modo, but I can't find it anywhere now It was quite long ago, but if I remember it correctly, the girl's and tutorials name was Adriana,or something like that...I used her references just to build the general shape,I then imported the model in ZBrush and started playing with proportions and stuff. This was my first female model,so ,as for my every project, I didn't know where I was going with this so I was simply experimenting with the look until I got satisfying results ![]() The only thing I could suggest you is using Google with something like "super model" typed in. There are plenty of images of beautiful girls so it was quite a help for me You don't really need to follow this tutorial step by step.It just shows you all those loops and shapes and how they should be placed to get good results. What I did while watching the tutorial was pressing "Pause" every 5 seconds, going to MAX and making the same thing in there It might sound dumb, but this was the easiest way to learn how to make a head for me...I also know a good link with Kolby Jukes' "Hell Boy" video tut,so I can post it if you want. It's always a pleasure to watch a real master at work ![]()

Aleks do you use just a front image to base your models face on or do you go with front and side. Ya I can find some stunning looking women but only a front views...
![]() Edit: How can I creat hair within max 07. I would like to make the hair as real as poss within max, or will I need a new program for this ??? Last edited by Pixelgen; 11-04-2007 at 01:55 AM.. |

I used front and side view images to create the base mesh and after importing it into Zbrush only front side pictures were used. Just to see how things should look properly,as I've mentioned above...
I don't know about MAX 7,but versions 8 and 9 have a really nice hair engine (?). There was a plugin for MAX as well, but I don't remember what it's called and never used it actually. Shag Hair was it called or something like that and it cost money...
