Guns over Europe

Hello, i have been working on this clip for the last few weeks and previously posted my progress here-
http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?t=38118&page=3

I have decided to start a new thread though as the old one was mainly about an old clip i was doing.

So, i've been doing a WW2 Battle of britain clip, i'm quite a way into it's production, but there are still many things that need changeing, fixing and making..

This is how the clip looks so far-

I do need to stress that this is very much a wip and c. crits are more than welcome..

Wow very nice. Love the animation, anxious to see more xD
I'm also starting on making some aircraft, but especially texturing them is still hard for me ^^
Hope I can make airplanes which are good as yours one day =)

Great work man! The only thing I think is wrong are the bullets. I don't think they should glow like that... If you have ever seen the movie Flyboys that is a good example of what they should look like. You only see the smoke trail and it is only for a short distance. The smoke is also more noticable because it is darker

yes they do. They're called tracer rounds, they were very popular at the time because it's nearly impossible to correct your gunfire if you can't see where your bullets are hitting. hence the term tracer. Also, since the Messerschmidt 109 was equipped with a 20 millimeter canon, and later on a 50 mm canon those sorts of things would be very obvious. They aren't called canons for no reason.

As for the animation, spectacular! I really enjoyed. What software are you using? Can see see some shots of the planes?

Later on i'll render out hires version, but there is still lots of work to be done first..
As for the tracers, I try to look at ww2 footage for how things looked, rather than movies..

Just back from 2 weeks in the south of france, fantastic place..

Here is the last thing i was working on before i went away. It's the latest revision of my bf109e4. This time remodeled to the original plans, i.e. not so chubby..
http://www.episode2ish.net/DHA%2...0remoulded.mov

Expect updates soon, once i've remembered how to open my 3d program..

This doesn't look like a big update at first but i've been working on the look of my world. Updating the horizon, the look and effect of the fogging and the ocean too. The purple colour in the sea has been corrected and now the sunspot on the ocean is under my control..

back with the latest update..

Firstly it's gone widescreen. As the oldish filter fell away and the bruckheimer music started to filter in it was only matter of time before i switched to widescreen. With the extra render time and file sizes, I have increased the resolution of the renders (though not to HD yet i'm afraid).

Next up i've fitted the slimmed down bf 109.
The debris frm the hurricane is a little more subtle.
The new world has been implemented (effecting light and reflections).
The Hurricane now has battle damage.
The flightpaths of the aircraft have been edited (i'll get there in the end)
Updated my smoke technique.
Removed the tracers from the cannon fire, replacing it with muzzle flame.

This is still a wip, so feel free to critisise..

I have been toying with the idea of a cockpit view, so i've done a low poly version to see how it would look..

http://www.episode2ish.net/DHA%20files/bob/bob8.wmv

It's still only an idea and would take quite a bit of work, both for the modeling and for the implementation.

What do you think???

Glad you like it..

I am having trouble with the pov, this cockpit veiw is only a test. I'm going to do an edited version later (with multiple camera angles), first off i was want to do a stock footage style clip.

A under wing camera would have this forced perspective, the pilot can easily look around, unlike the fixed camera (hence the leader often goes off screen, but the pilot could still see him (apart from when the leader is below the camera)).

The cameras were also zoomed in a little (presumably for good kill footage) explaining why the camera plane looks so close to the leader a/c.

In all the old footage i have the camera was positioned so you never saw the a/c it's attached to at all. In my clip this leaves the veiwer unaware the camera plane exists (maybe i'll do an establishing shot of the 2 germans).

The camera plane will shoot too next render, then i'll need to update the radio chatter.

One thing the cockpit version has shown me is that the camera a/c is too gentle in it movements and will be getting an overhaul very soon. This clip still has a lot of work to be done..

Just a quick update here, this was another pov i was thinking about using, maybe i'll use it later..
http://www.episode2ish.net/DHA%20files/bob/bob9.wmv

Now i'm going to change the camera movements. I'll have to re-render all the layers!

I wanted post a comment, that you should add a cockpit view,
but then I've seen your post^^
I don't know if it was your goal,to achieve the perspective behind the plane, looking like the views in games like Bf2 or something like that.
I mean the following perspective behind the plane,it's so smoothed,
looks a bit strange to me(personal opinion)

Maybe this movie give you some ispiration for camera tracking:
