The New SMC's - 007 - Weekly Projections

1, Each challenge we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modeling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive.

How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief can be removed and the poster disqualified.

2, You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries. Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified.

3, Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like but it must include a clear and easy to see wire frame of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Please use a screen grab. No other method is acceptable and any "wire renders" or wireframes we can't see properly will be removed and the poster disqualified.

4, You must include the following details with each submission: software used and time spent creating the model. Any further information is voluntary but posts not containing the required information can be removed and the poster disqualified.

5, Post only one image submission per entry which must be no larger than 1024x768 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 195k. These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page. Do not link to external images files. Images larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials) will be removed and the poster disqualified.

6, The creation of displacement maps, normal maps and any splines drawn out in an external program other than your modeling software are to be included in your modeling time.

7, Time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the allocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognizable.

8, Posting the same entry twice in a challenge is considered to be double posting and will result in a disqualification. When asked to fix a previous post due to DQ or any other reason, you must fix the first post, or delete it altogether and create a new one.

These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions!

Time limit - 60 minutes
Deadline - 22.00 G.M.T. Wednesday 19th of September 2007
Subject - Projector

Projector: No 1080p resolution displays??? What fun is that? Who wants to play Tic-Tac-Toe when you can throw a flying side kick right to the head of your opponent in glorious HD! Board games... who needs them when the resolution of the movie you're watching is so rich... that you can feel the heat from those on screen explosions!

Have Fun and Good Luck!

High-Tech Retro Gaming

What cracks me up is folks go out and spend mega $$$$ on a new computer,
HD screens, projection and 7.1 theater packages.

Then

They end up playing Solitare on the screen
Or Minesweeper . . . lol

lol that's funny. Wow imagine using Cinema 4D, Lightwave, Photoshop or 3D Studio Max in a HD projecter so that the entire wall is your render screen

Yes, I'm rendering my work now, but I'm pretty unsatisfied with it. Actually it's a disaster, but what the hell, it's my first try ^^

Here is my entry - done in 60 mins, can be ALOT better I know. I wanted to make some fancy stereo projector (for those 3d movies you know) but the time was really short for me. Usually I take all my time to make something and for the 1st time I'm having a deadline so... ^^

Here it is -

Classic Gamer - 3D Threedy New SMC 007 Projector Entry #01

Ok well here's my first entry for this week's SMC. It's loosely (very loosely) based on a Sanyo digital projector I found on google images.

I'd loved to have added much more details but at 50 mins it'd be pushing it to model the top buttons. Everything was modelled from primitive, the front lens cap base and the oval were booleaned and made editable and as such had to be a high segmentation of 32 rotational segments otherwise it'd have looked quite crude, and because the mesh wen't very awful when mesh smoother aswell.

I'm planning a 2nd entry already based on a small Slide Projector we had when I was younger. Remember slides? the small negative of original photographs? This was all before digital images lol.

Here's my first effort anyway.

Enjoy & Kind Regards

Classic Gamer

I see the 3DTotal guys missed out on the opportunity to make a James Bond themed challenge this week.

I may partake in this one, can't say I have much knowledge regarding projectors though.

Classic Gamer - 3D Threedy New SMC 007 Projector Entry #02

2nd entry from me here then, a quite quick entry this one. I'm not too happy with it, but i'd spent the time making it and so I decided to submit it anyway.

I hope everything looks ok.

Kind Regards

Classic Gamer

My entry for the week, didnt have time to finish some details as usual, buttons on top. Too much time spent trying to get those side vents right, one of those things that would be easy in poly modelling but a nightmare in nurbs.
hoping to do a couple more this week.
Are overhead projectors fair game?
