#1 - Zinkete, Fantastic execution and creativity. I'm not a huge fan of the design, but that's more of my subjective opinion. I suppose I'm not much of a fan of the demented look =p
#2 - XineoF, definitely my favorite design. This guy is ready for the big screen! The pose he's in doesn't feel natural though, the action line is broken at the hind legs. #3 - Husam, I like this guy a lot. Solid design and presentation. The shadow color I think should be black and white or at least desaturated further. ... #4 - Me, this was my first time competing... I'm not sure I'll have time for the dinosaur compo but perhaps the next one after that. #5 - Mape, I feel like you did a great job on the head, but rushed the rest of him. The cigar seems kinda random in his hand, and the pose is a little awkward, especially the hand holding the cigar. #6 - Stiderotte, I really like this guy, good job all around on the creation of the character. The render quality is lacking, and the scene isn't necessarily interesting. I would suggest trying to convey more emotion or going for something a little more dynamic. #7 - elpato, I like the composition and idea of this one. I think you just have a little more experience you need to gain in modeling and texturing before you create something really fantastic. I'm not sure about your character design, I don't know if you were just unable to transform your design into 3D or if you need to spend some more time on design. Don't just look at the life references when creating cartoon characters, go out and see what Disney and other people did. Contrary to popular belief, it is okay to draw inspiration from other artists... especially when you're starting out. #8 DaddyDoom, fantastic presentation... but I think you could have spent a lot more time refining the hyena and making him less geometric. #9 Sadot - Good stuff, I think you might need to work on breaking out of "the box" some. #10 Firehazurd - I like your concept, the one that is your avatar. I think if you had stuck to that a little more closely it would have turned out better. The presentation feels kinda cheap, I figure that if you're going to go far enough to give the creature an environment, you can't just throw it together or else it will actually detract from your work. If you had given us just what it looks like in your avatar in 3D, gray background and all, it would have been much better. Other than that, I don't remember for sure but I recall looking at your mesh in the other thread, do some research into topology. Look at some professional meshes and look at exactly how they do it, where they put their poles, etc. Once you've gotten a grip on topology, I think you'll find it a million times easier to convey your concept in your model. and of course, Shahin_fj Sorry you didn't submit in time man =/ Your Hyena is really great. The texture is obviously rushed, and the mouth is kinda throatless =p. But I'm thinking you probably already thought about these things your self. Great model man =) .... Great stuff ya'll! I hope no one takes some of my critiques too personally, I'm just lookin to help =) |

RageCage, tnx for the comment. You're right, but I simply didn't have the time for it. Lots of "serious" work coming in the last weeks, and I barely have the time to come in here and take a peek of what's cookin... I will probably skip the Dinosaur challenge too

tnx!
Thank you very much RageCage for your advise and critics!, as you say I've tons of things to learn, but I think that the most important one is illumination, so it would be really nice if you or Zinkete or XineoF or whoever is going to write the next articles for the 'making of' could give us some clues about how did you manage the illumination more than the modeling or texturing maybe...
Well, that's my wish, I hope you understand... ![]() |
