Managed to get one in before this challenge was over. This was made entirely from splines. In the wireframe I left the splines as renderable for the wicker mesh, since it's easier to see what I was doing. The hardest part was essentially having to weave wicker in 3D. I spent the remaining time trying to nudge the vertices around so none of the strands were overlapping.
Software: 3DS Max Modeling: 60 minutes

Art Deco Rocker
My first and only entry for the week.
After studying the original image and Mr. Lemon's entry, I finally got this one to work. The dual rendering times were from the larger picture (2.5 minutes) and the smaller picture (57 minutes due to a multi-pass render). I am once again surprised that the render came out so nice. My neighbor mistaked it for a photograph, especially when I showed him the reference. Anyways, the wire is not as clean as I would have liked but I was just ready to start the finally tweaks when I noticed that I was right at the 60 minute time limit. If only I had just another 15 minutes . Turbosmooth did take care of the problems that I was going to tweak out of the wire, though, so no loss.Let me know what YOU think, especially Mr. Lemon. I still would like to see your workflow to see how you got such a clean wire. Voodrew

Hi Guys,
Just had a general question on the SMCs...how are the models actually judged? Is it based on model complexity (i.e., how much detail you can cram into an hour), how you solved the challenge initiative, mesh cleanliness, concepts, final presentation, all of the above? Do elegant simple models have a chance against more complex ones? For example, if two people model a chair and one guy hand-models basketweave/rattan while the other guy achieves the same effect with a texture and transparency map...does the favor lean more towards the former? I apologize if this has been asked before. I've only entered one SMC previously (Wine Rack) so am not too up and up on how it all works. I'm hoping to become more involved now in effort to get my production skills up to speed (even if I fail the SMC, I always manage to learn something so it's all good either way). Pete

From what i've gathered numerous things are taken into account with the judging.
It's certainly all about the modelling, the texturing and rendering of an entry is simply there for asthetics really. But it's also about how well you've managed your time building the topic in question, sometimes it may be the case of how intricate a design may be, but also this can hinder you aswell, especially if your mesh is too dense, you have to have a healthy balance I think between a good and readable wireframe screengrab aswell as a nice entry, it's also about using you're imagination aswell as your skills. Many different factors are considered NitroLiq so anyone can win one of these SMC's just as long as they follow the instructions and layout the final compostion properly. ![]() Kind Regards Classic Gamer

Time For The Comments Page To Make A Comeback I Think!
Well, it's unlikely that i'll make a 3rd entry after all, but the least I can do is comment again for you all.
Here goes ![]() Marty_McFly-3DT Post #01 Modelling Really wonderful modelling as always, great use of splines aswell aa traditional poly modelled sections. Very nice backing setion with the heart shape, and really nice rounding lathes and edges. Texturing & Rendering Nice simplistic pink paint material, alongside the HDRI and blue flooring looks very nice, good overall lighting and a pleasent image allround. Really nice starter to get us going for the upcoming week. L3XICON Post #03 Modelling Always beautiful modelling from yourself, and your starting entry is no exception, really very very nice curvature and excellent modelling layout and execution, superb cushion too. Texturing & Rendering Wonderful gingham material/texture looks very realistic and mapped flawlessly onto the base mesh. Gorgeous wooden material with a subtle reflection to give it that brand new look. Really nice lighting and a great overall render. Always a pleasure to see your work. swaroopindia2 Post #06 Modelling Looking good here this entry, really nice clean well thought out mesh building. Great shapes, and a very natural real world look to the chair. Nice additional head rest and great curvature on the side supports. Texturing & Rendering Not really much to crit here at all, the reflective wooden material looks natural and well lit, the render looks really nice. It's a good entry for me anyway. L3XICON Post #08 Modelling Another excellent idea from you, there's definately a nod to the 60's style pod chairs here, but with the added bonus of being able to rock around in it. Very clean mesh building, great shapes and style here too. Texturing & Rendering Wonderful wooden flooring, a great coiled chrome spring and a super reflective red material makes this a very fun rocking chair, really nic natural and subtle lighting. Another really nice entry. mr_lemon Post #12 Modelling Inpsired model this one, even though it's a real world rocking chair, I think it'd be a little big of a head scratcher for me at first to model this, it's one of those items that looks simpler than it seems to model. However you've managed it and it looks really good, perfect clean well planned model process, and a crackin' shape to it. Texturing & Rendering Well what can you say, when it comes to Maxwell Render, it's almost effortless, but it's so simple but so effective, I think you mentioned that it's very difficult to find maxwell materials, however I really do like this, it's so natural and very realistic. I love it. L3XICON Post #13 Modelling You're 3rd model already and this time you've really pushed the boat out, and Rocking Chair for the discerning monarch lol, it's very cleaver and beautifully produced, great detailing, and curvature, i'm a sucker for detailing it always attracts me, this is superbly modelled, and my fave so far. Texturing & Rendering Fantastic material, especially like the burloak wooden materials and the red/orangy cushioning. Brillianly lit and a really nice render. Another fave for sure. EF_studios Post #18 Modelling Cool entry, very office like almost, I could see many top professionals rocking away in meeting rooms with this one. Superb job on the cushioning, really clean and very well produced mesh. Texturing & Rendering Wonderful materials, look very realistic perfect metallic texturing and a natual light. It's a very good entry indeed. Skatcher Post #19 Modelling Wow, what style! Excellent stylised design here, really cool mesh building and deforming. Beautifully modelled, very clean and really inspring. Texturing & Rendering Gorgeous almost photoreal rendering, excellent realistic lighting, and the material look natural and real. Wonderful work, I really really like this one alot. mr_lemon Post #20 Modelling Well having the same stylised chair as Skatcher isn't a problem to me, it shows how both of you approached this design, and another excellent mesh build by yourself as always, clearly and cleanly laid out meshes and very well detailed. Texturing & Rendering As with the previous entry an excellent render too, wonderful colouring and natural realistic lighting. Always a pleasure to see work of this standard. WarT Post #21 Modelling A warm welcome to the Threedy SMC's great to see you on here, and a very nice first entry too, really well thought out and assembled meshes. Really great curvature on the sides supports of the chair, and a natural chair backing and seating. Texturing & Rendering Not bad texturing at all, a good dark almost mahogany wood material and a nice grid backing for the chair, lighting is subtle, simple but effective. A nice entry. I hope to see more from you in the future SMC's. thegimp Post #23 Modelling Well for saying that this was the 4th entry you tried before you felt confident to post on here, I think it's a good one, looks like it'd be really comfy too. Great clean modelling, good shape and looks very natural. Texturing & Rendering Nice simple white material works wonders sometimes, good lighting, looks like a night time room. The render looks ok. Not bad at all. thegimp Post #24 Modelling And a 2nd entry from you here then, this time going for a more industrial style than comfy. I must admit I prefer this entry, the modelling is really simple but it really really works, very clean modelling and perfectly laid out. Texturing & Rendering Nice material, very close to the reference image supplied, the wood isn't too bad, i'd have chosen a more subtle wood myself, but never the less it still looks nice to me. Nice lighting and a nice overall render. Good work. Pine Post #32 Modelling This is lovely, beautiful construced clean meshes, really nice style and great prodcution. Just forgot the rockers though lmao, oh well lol. Texturing & Rendering Not bad material used here at all, the material looks pretty nice i've not used Indigo 0.9 test 8, but it looks very simialr to maxwell render, and that good in my opinion. A nice entry though. Renfield Post #36 Modelling Cool entry, nice clean modelling, and imcredibly simple but very very effective, it reminds me very much of the wheelchair from X-Men. Texturing & Rendering Really beautiful chrome and leather materials, looks very realistic, with the HDRI used aswell with the chrome, it looks excellent. Mr Armless Post #40 Modelling Now this is inspiring, a very cool idea and beautifully detailed, perfect modelling, very clean meshes and just splendid modelling here. Texturing & Rendering Really natural and realistic lighting I think, great material especially for the horse, and a perfect wooden material too. Very kid friendly rocking chair, really excellent entry. pixelfreak Post #41 Modelling Cool design, really nice clean modelling, simple but effective. This has a really really nice natural and comfy look to it. Texturing & Rendering Not to bad texturing, very simplistic but it works for me, nice lighting with a nice shadowing. Makes a nice overal render. Not bad. macghost Post #42 Modelling Now this is different and all in one comfy rocking chair, inspired and clever modelling, this looks very interesting and really great clean modelling. Texturing & Rendering Great render, the lighting is natural and convincing, the chat material is pretty nice also, if a little shiny, the flooring texture looks real, and the overal render looks pretty real to me. Nice entry. macghost Post #44 Modelling Another entry in the same vain as comfy and rocking lol, but I have to admit as much as I liked the design of the previous entry, there's a little something extra that I like about this, maybe it's because it looks easier to make than it is, some of the curvature in this chair is tricky and I think you've doen a great job with it. Texturing & Rendering Wonderful lighting, very nice and natural and pretty realistic aswell. Nice material especially on the cushioned seating area this is a great entry. My only single crit would be however that on this entry you're wireframe screengrab is a touch on the small side and as such your wireframes are getting lost a little. It'd be a shame to be DQ'd because other than that it's a good entry. swaroopindia2 Post #45 Modelling Cool shape, really nice clean modelling again and a very stylised look to it, I think i'd probably break a chair like that lol. Texturing & Rendering A litle too reflective for my tastes, but the lighting is lovely and the overall render looks very convincing and realistic. Nice entry. wintermute Post #46 Modelling Very different entry from you, and as you've mentioned in your post that you like that this entry is rather luekwarm, i'm afriad I have to agree, there's nothing really wrong with it, but I've seen you produce much much better than this, you're a much better modeller than this entry. Texturing & Rendering Not much to say about this really, the lighting and material are ok, the chair looks like it's for a child, which I think was the intention, it's not bad, but as stated before you are better than this. I'm not having a go, It's just I know for a fact that you've produced fantastic works before this and this entry isn't doing you justice. On another note in the original post you mentioned how you'd commented on everyone's entr'es, like i'm doing right here, and the internet ate it, I always write my comments in Notepad, then save the comments file regularly and then once i've done I go into the advanced section of the reply thread section and copy and paste my comments then add bold, italics & underlines etc before posting. I've lost my huge lists of comments so many many times doing it the other way lol. vidiot Post #47 Modelling Nice starting entry here, good overal shape and a nice style to is, good clean modelling with great curvatures. I love the different variations of the same chair also. Texturing & Rendering Lovely red material very vibrant and inviting, great chrome seat backing bars of the right version aswell, and a nice wooden flooring. Nice simplistic lighting makes for a really nice entry. EF_studios Post #48 Modelling Wow how simple is your entry..........and yet it just works doesn't it lol. This is just fantastic, it'd definately to fun trying to stay upright lol. Texturing & Rendering Wonderful brown leather material, looks absolutely spot on, as does the chrome, this is just really cool. Well done. ajcgi Post #51 Modelling This is cool, great clean mesh building, a fantastic shape, and looks really nice indeed. Texturing & Rendering Wonderful blue material, looks realistic and inviting, I wanna sit in that chair it looks realistic and excellently lit. Really nice entry here. Pine Post #52 Modelling Another entry from yourself then, and this time opting for a small wooden based rocking chair, this isn't bad either, good production of the mesh, very clean modelling and well thought out, nice cushions also. Texturing & Rendering Different style of texturing, the wood is very dark, perhaps mahogany but it looks pretty nice to me anyway, I'm not a fan of the texture/material for the cushions, I'm not sure why to be honest but it's just not me thing, just my opinion though of course lol. Other than that this is another nice entry from you. TheBigunK Post #53 Modelling Ha Ha Ha now this is clever, placing all these redundant elements together to make a hybrid new rocking chair, this is really cool, perfectly clean modelling, very very well produced and refreshing to see a totally different style. Texturing & Rendering Superb texturing effort here, everything from the cork to the bottle cap to the subbuteo and cushion have obviously had alot of attention to detail with the creation of the textures and this is just outstanding, nothing more to say really. L3XICON Post #54 Modelling A Rocking sofa lol, turning the idea on it's head, very nice clean modelling as always and almost looks like a sofa or ski's lol. Texturing & Rendering Lovely rendering really, nie and subtle lighting and lovely material. Not much more to say. vidiot Post #55 Modelling Ha Ha Ha a Banana Rocking Chair, what will they think of next eh? this is clever though, cool clean modelling, and a great shape. Texturing & Rendering Nice logo and bright vibrant colour, not to bad wooden flooring, nice subtle lighting. Ojah Post #57 Modelling Nice entry, great clean mesh, and excellent curavature and style to the rocking chair. Texturing & Rendering Perfect material for the cushioned sections, looks very very real, nice bright and natural lighting, lovely entry. NitroLiq Post #60 Modelling Wow, what a nice entry, perfect clean modelling, looks really nice. Texturing & Rendering Beautiful render, really amazing and bright summer's day style lighting and simple but so so effective material, I love this! Trimyr Post #62 Modelling And once again you never fail to deliver, what an entry, wowzers that's goo, so much curvature and all with edited splines too, really well done with this one especially with the weaving, even though it's relatively small copied section, it'd still do my head in slightly lol. Texturing & Rendering Wonderful texturing and rendering really, this could very well be a winner for me, I don't feel I need to mention much more the entry does enough. voodrew Post #63 Modelling Well going for the same idea that mr_lemon attepted aswell, it's just as good too, it's always interesting to see how people take on a design in different ways, Really nice clean mesh and great shape. Texturing & Rendering Lovely renders, nice to show different material and colour also, great lighting. This is very nice indeed. swaroopindia2 Post #64 Modelling Cool wooden style entry, very good. Great clean modelling the arm rests look particulalry tricky well done with this one it looks great. Texturing & Rendering Lovely wooden material, lighting is simple but effective. It's a cool entry this one. Well then, that's about it for today, I can't type anymore lol Sorry if i've missed any members out it wasn't my intention. I hope it's all ok, and if there's any spelling mistakes..........ignore them lol. Kind Regards Classic Gamer P.S - I'm really in the mood for a new topic now too.

I think I'm on a 'whimsy' kick. I really like Lexicon's 1st entry as it reminds me of something you'd see in "Santa's Workshop...or his country home in the off-season...haha. Also, TheBigunK...really dig the concept/model. It automatically brings to mind something like "bug's life" -styled furniture. Love it! Great entries from everyone...these are just two of my favs (and I don't have the stamina to write the epic post like Classic Gamer!)
Thanks for the comments, btw!

Thanks and Non-Entry
CG: Thanks for the comments. I agree that it is interesting to see people take on the same models from different angles. Though I am not as happy with my wireframe as I would like to be, the end result turned out something that I am proud of, and honestly, I don't think that I would have been able to achieve that without using Mr. Lemon's post as an example.
About the rendering, for anyone that may be interested. I have long been using Mental Ray as my rendering engine to attempt to create photo realistic images. Most of my renders with Default Scan Line seemed to produce images that were obviously CGI creations. Lately though, Default Scan Line seems to be my answer. No expensive rendering engines, just the one that ships with Max. Who knew, eh? As for the non-entry: I found the plans for this in Popular Mechanics Magazine. It is a porch rocker. It took me a couple of hours to model it and place all the pieces, but I thought that it was worthy of display. Plans for this model (to be created in a real world wood working shop) can be found on the PM magazine's website. I have done a couple of their plans for various reasons, including this one, a pergola, and an arbor. Check it out yourself, sometime. Again, this is a non-entry:
