The New SMC's - 013 - Boo!

1, Each challenge we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modeling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive.

How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief can be removed and the poster disqualified.

2, You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries. Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified.

3, Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like but it must include a clear and easy to see wire frame of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Please use a screen grab. No other method is acceptable and any "wire renders" or wireframes we can't see properly will be removed and the poster disqualified.

4, You must include the following details with each submission: software used and time spent creating the model. Any further information is voluntary but posts not containing the required information can be removed and the poster disqualified.

5, Post only one image submission per entry which must be no larger than 1024x768 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 195k. These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page. Do not link to external images files. Images larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials) will be removed and the poster disqualified.

6, The creation of displacement maps, normal maps and any splines drawn out in an external program other than your modeling software are to be included in your modeling time.

7, Time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the allocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognizable.

8, Posting the same entry twice in a challenge is considered to be double posting and will result in a disqualification. When asked to fix a previous post due to DQ or any other reason, you must fix the first post, or delete it altogether and create a new one.

These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions!

Time limit - 90 minutes
Deadline - 22.00 G.M.T. Wednesday 7th of November 2007
Subject - Monster in the closet

Monster in the closet: Ok, so last year I had some disappointed members when Halloween came around and I didn't use a Halloween themed challenge. Well you don't have to tell me twice... so here you go. Things that go bump in the night... it's your time to shine. You know it's in there... and it's just waiting for you to go to sleep so it can... well... who knows what it wants? All I know is I really don't want to find out! That's why I keep my closet doors open... so the monsters have no where to hide! So... what monsters do you guys have in your closet? (Just to be clear... it is a themed challenge.. and the closet is part of the theme... )

Have Fun and Good Luck!

Oh wow! yes yes yes! you've nailed that entry Marty! it looks just like Mike Wacowski (not sure of spelling)

There's loads of monsters Inc to choose from and inventing our own monsters too!

What's even better is we get 90 mins to model AND it's a 2 weeker

I'm in for this one even if I do such as character modelling! that's the whole point of a chellenge right? lol

Love it!

Perfect starter entry Marty, it's spot on!

Good luck to all who enter, and I think it's gonna be alot more than the last SMC

Kind Regards

Let's just say that my first entry will be furry

I'm finally gonna try and have a proper go at creating fur, and posing also, I want my monster to be in a scary position.

I'm going to have to plan well ahead for this one.

Fingers crossed i'll be able to pull it off within the time limit, I really hate organic modelling, but it's a challenge and i'm not going to let it beat me

Fur is quite time consuming to do. Takes forever to get it the right length
and combed / brushed the way you want it to look. Not to mention most
processors flee in terror when you throw a hair / fur heavy scene at them.

I will try to make time to jump in on this one, but I've been swamped at
work lately :|

That's not what I mean't in the original post, the statement of wheather i'll be able to pull it off was directed at my modelling of the actual monster as I'm really bad at organic characters. Well actually I thought i'd make a few test fur models before I start my monster, then I can tweak to my hearts content the settings, once I've got the hair looking the way I like, I will have to remember exactly what I did and then start from scratch with the monster. I don't think there's anything wrong with doing that, just as long as I make sure I start from scratch. Most likely i'll model the monster base mesh first and then add the fur in the final moments.

Kind Regards

Classic Gamer

EDIT: I've been playing around with settings and i've got a fairly nice fur setup, all i've got to do is remember how to repeat the settings from scratch again once my monster body is finished

This is such a great challenge. 2 weeks, 90 minutes, great theme...

To ClassicGamer: You dont have to make organic monter. Think of what scares you, period. Think of non organic thing that scares you. Needles, wires, chains, scythes, lasers, robots... And you have your own personal closet monster
You dont have to do certified monster. Do your own. If microscope or portable game may be organic, why shouldnt monster be mechanical?

JAPO - You're dead right there, and i've been thinking of lots of other entry idea along several inorganic idea's, but my first entry will definately be furry, i've already got the fur how I like it, and it only took 2 attempts of test renders and hardly any tweaking, Cinema Hair in Cinema 4D is very versatile and quite easy to use once set up, plus i've used a brush tool in point mode and actually brushed the hair the way I want it, the base model for the monster has taken me 74 mins so far with the hair added and brushed i'm at 81 mins, so only 9 mins left to model a head! but he's gonna have one eye so it won't need much lol, i've planned for like 3 hours on this one, so I know exactly what I need to do.

Kind Regards

Oh I look forward to first entries. Congratulation on the fur. It gave me hell in Max. I have my entry already in my head. In fact my head is full of monsters, and some actually talk to me (or maybe those talking are real? Hard to tell). Anyways... good luck everybody. I first have to do some tests on how best to approach the problem. Then I will do some sketches...
