Unhappy Lighting problem

I used 3DsMax 8 in making this and I can't figure out why certain areas of the model are discolored and why these weird spots come up. I'm sure this is a newb question but any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

have you baked that texture using the render to texture thingy?

You get things like that when UVs overlap or when the cage isn't set to the right size when using projection mapping

I think, that uvs, aren't here involved, look at the whole scene, those dark sport ar everywhere, even on procedural textures. So I think , the problem is in render setings, obviously you're using standar or mental ray render engine. So suggest try to increase options responsable for GI or final gather , I think so

Response

Thank you everyone who posted a reply, as for Eva's response, I tried increasing the amount of Global illumination and increase/decrease the final gather amount but with no luck . The spots still returned.

Are you using proper materials for your renderer? e.g. don't use max's raytrace map if you're using mental ray. Use the mental ray or raytrace material instead.
You should also check that you haven't accidentally saved your maps in a weird format and that you don't have overbright maps or shellac-material (it's additive and not physically correct).
