I've Gotta Tell Somebody

So, I'm a part of another forum, which shall be nameless. There's a moderator there (the only one) and she hates me...go figure. I had placed a link to my blog in my signature, and she kept deleting it, without saying anything. So, I sent her a PM and said, "Are the sigs broken?" She said that there was an ad on the blog that conflicted with the forum. So, I said I'd remove the ad. She said, "No. No links at all. You can put a link in your profile."

I was ticked. Mostly because there are other members with links in their sigs.

So, I used some clever computer programming and built a program that will show one image for her country (a harmless, inspirational quote) and another image for EVERYONE ELSE!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! IN HER FACE!

So, anywho, now I can put up any image I want. Since she and the forum owners are from the same country, she'll never know any better unless she (for whatever reason) uses a foreign proxy.

So, I have to be kind of careful, but this feeling of power remains mine to wield at will.

Bow before me, meager internet dwellers.

Yeah. It was actually pretty simple. Here's the secret:

I tried to install a dynamic image via PHP, but the forum returned an error that doing such a thing wasn't allowed. So, I instead entered a URL to a file on my server which I knew didn't exist. Next, I used .htaccess to redirect any requests for that specific file to a PHP page. The PHP page checks the user's IP address against a database of countries and redirects to another image depending on your settings.

So, because all of the redirecting happens server side, the forum displays the redirected photo as what was returned for the address I'd put in my signature.

I love thinking out of the box!
