my study room

Hi folks,

This wip will be an attempt at re-creating my small office room we have at the appartment (basically where I browse the forums).

The project will be made in maya 2008 with the help of photoshop.

The lighting includes the use of Physical sun and sky, Portal lights, FG + GI

I have alot of stuff to model, texture and stuff, so I expect this will take awhile.

As usual, I will appreciate your crits and opinions!

cheers!

-edit-

my specs for the project :

3ghz intel processor
3 Gig ram
radeon 9600 pro

render time for current image : :66 minutes (with FG and GI rebuild on)

(*did a couple edits as I tweaked the exposure and some shaders, the render time is for the last update*)

Hello again,

Just a small word to say that today I plan to add a few objects, I just finished modeling the blinds and I'm gonna be attacking the chair in a few moments, I'll try to post an update tonight.

Well, I was hoping to get farther along today and post a new render, but that will have to wait a bit. I'm uploading the blinds and the beginning of the chair modeling for you to see, hopefully I will be done with the chair tommorow.

(*oh what the heck.. gonna go watch tv for awhile so I'll crank out a render with the blinds and the, at the moment, incredibly uncomfortable chair, see you in about an hour*)

Here is the latest render. render time is 56 minutes.

I still have to do the ropes for the blinds, will probably lower them a bit too. that will be for a next update tho

This looks promising, beautiful warm and sunny day feel to the scene. Really nice, and great modelling so far, keep going once you get chance.

Hi guys!

thanks alot for the kind words, much appreciated. I plan to keep this thread alive and well with updates, even though the time I can put on it will vary depending on weather, work and woman (the 3 w's of my tangled web) I'll try to put a little something new each day

cheers!

(* I'm working on the seat cushion a bit for the chair at the moment, and I'm finding it frustrating a bit to come up with a good mesh for the sewing on it, so if I update later on today with the seat cushion, crit away, I'll likely re-do it later on in the project and treat this first try as an experience builder. *)

Hi prld,

Well, I don't have time to get into the depth of things with lighting right now but I can give you a few pointers. I will explain the lighting setup a bit later on.

For the moment, if you use a Physical sun and sky setup, I would recommend using a mental ray exposure node (plugged into the lens shader port of your cameras) with it you will be able to get alot more life out of your renders. For example, this scene I have setup right now, if I were not to use an exposure node the image would be black (except perhaps the direct light).

Also, I'm using Global Illumination in addition to Final gather, which helps fill out the scene quite nicely with indirect illumination. At the moment I believe my sun is shooting about 2 milliion photons and my area light in my window about 500 000.

When you use Fg and GI you should always use the same scale for your scenes to help you figure out what numbers will be good for you. At the moment I have maya setup so that 1 unit is 1 foot.

If you have any specific questions feel free to ask.

Oh and I will also get to taking a picture of the room later on!

Now, for the new renders.

The chair still has alot of work needed. It's still missing some details on the lower part, the armrests, the backplate and the back cushion (right now it's just the seat cushion that's been duplicated)

Please note that for the moment the materials aren't final, I'm more invested in the modeling aspect right now and I'm going for acceptable materials to output a few fun renders while I work

This is a first basic setup while I flesh out the rest of the scene, it will get an overhaul when more of the scene items are in the scene. From your comment though it seems like you might have something specific in mind, might I ask what that is?

prld : without more information it's hard to say, since I don't know what type of light you are using, what the scene looks like, etc. Give me a bit more info! off the bat I would say check your light samples (if you are using an area light)

Just a small update today really, I'm a bit tired when I come home from work.. So the armrest got a first try. See you folks soon!

wow this is looking really good...do you have any tips or links to some tutorials i could look into for using the physical sun and sky in maya. I am recreating a set that we use on a stopmotion tv show i work on and I tried using the physical sun and sky but with little success as the room only has one window and I can't figure out how to tweak the settings to make the light play in the room a little better.
