thanks a lot for your compliments, I'm using one main light (spot with area light, quadratic decay) one fill light (blueish spot with area, quadratic decay) and one strong point light without decay for back light.

hmm what do you mean by combining?
well, I will try to explain a bit of my network.

the base material is a lambert just for previewing the textures, then I made every node for sss to work (I hate the automated thing maya 2008 have, too buggy, I made a script for maya 8.5 that create the entire network on the current applied material works nice on 2008) sss, mr texture and lightmap, and applied it all on the lambert SG, I've also made 2 misss_set_normal for a normal map, and a bump map, then used a color mix node to use them both on the single bump imput that mr sss has.

ahh ok that makes perfect sense thanks a lot! I will defiantly have to play around with it a bit and see what kind of results I can achieve

this work is progressing nicely man, also for the hair are you using maya hair or planes and texturing them in photoshop.
