Classic Gamer-3DT's Comment's Page Returns!
The inevitable return of my comments page, it's been away for far too long and what with b3ta putting me to shame, and riddled me with guilt I was compelled to bring my comments page back. Seriously though with comments like b3ta and others it's a really positive thing to have, even if the comments aren't good any feedback is good feedback I always say and you all learn from anything that is said.
Are you sitting comfortably?.....then i'll begin, Marty_Mcfly-3DT Post #01 Modelling Marty's starter, the model/scene that inspires us all to shoot off to our nearest google/search engine and fine as many reference pictures, artwork etc and start planning and modelling our own creations. As always you're starter look stunning, the this one is no exception either, the modelling is well planned, clean mesh building. The curvature on the upper section that becomes almost like a teardrop effect looks brilliant, this littler mechanical peices, and the grinder blades along with the electric plug are those little attentions to detail that just edge up the realism. Texturing & Lighting The texturing although metallic, glass and a white base is simplistic, but with the addition of the front controls image an vray working it's magic as always makes this subtle model shine. The inclusion on the hdri on the glass add's this little bit extra, and pleases the eye immensly. Always a good start with you Marty. EF_ Post #06 Modelling Well a daft entry, but none the less a good one, the model is clean and quickly made for only 5 mins, but it does the job lol. Texturing & Lighting Another vray lit scene and looks pretty real to me too, I don't think this is to be taken seriously, but it's still a nice entry with a good render and it made me chuckle. Aleg8r Post #07 Modelling Now this is beautifully modelling, take a look at the detailing on this model, everything is clearly well produced great clean lines and really very well made, Those little details all around this model really add the realism. My favourite sections of the cogs and the drawer handle the handle shape is perfect. Texturing & Lighting Not too bad render at all here, good sunlight, the old copperish brown procedural looks good, certainly fits in with the design as does the gold/brass sections, nice wood textures also. The sunlight is a little too intense in some area's but overal looks great. Stargazy Post #09 Modelling Going for a nice traditional styled coffee grinder here, I saw hundreds upon hundreds of these coffee grinder's and slightly different variations within google. You're moelling is suprisingly quite simple, and yet it somehow works quite well. Overall it does seem like you've gone a little high poly when you didn't really need to, the drawer handle and grinder handles for instance look far too high poly, when with at least half the segments used would have still worked just as good with a hypernurbs/mesh smoothing null. But still it has a certain charm to it. Texturing & Lighting Not too bad texturing, I would have liked to have seen a different style of wood for the inside and sides of the coffee drawer, the copper and chrome looks spot on though, the lighting seems fairly nice with the soft shadows, but it's not working too well with the completely reflective ground object/floor, if you either removed the reflections or added 8-10 dispersion to it, I think it would work a little better. The design does look good though on the whole. Good job. pables Post #14 Modelling Wow, this is very good indeed now, lovely clean modelling, nice looking grinder wheel handles and the centered container's shape looks very natural. The small wheel handle looks a little high poly but that is most likely due to the wireframe size. Really nice model though. Texturing & Lighting Well anther vray scene here then and the lighting is just flawless, your materials are fairly good, I'm not keen on the wood too much, but the main red/orange container and the gingham cloth look nearly photoreal. Gorgeous lighting and it really is nice to see. Great entry. ravenlp Post #15 Modelling Good shape to this entry, the modelling is pretty nice, but I don't know why you're using or have some many triangles, I don't know Maya so i'm not sure how primitive/models are made in the software, but this is still really nice, the small detailing on grinding handle and accompanying sections looks great. Every thing looks a little high poly for my liking though and if that's the way it's been done then disregard my thoughts. Texturing & Lighting Not too bad textures the mini grinding wooden handle is a really nice wooden texture and the chrome looks great, I'm not too keen on the lighting though, seem seem to have 3 lights all with separate soft shadows which are intersecting each other on the bottom left hand side of the render. Overall I like this those and don't worry it's just my opinion, you don't have to agree with my thoughts. ![]() CSF Post #17 Modelling Lovely clean modelling on this entry. apart from the drawers and grinding handle all one mesh too which is very impressive. Nice detailing of the handle and the clean mesh builing really pleases the viewer. Texturing & Lighting Pretty clever old texturing, alot of bumps and decay, love ths DOF of the handle too, not bad lighting either subtle but effective. Very nice entry. alaya Post #18 A warm welcome to the threedy forums alaya, What nice little and simply entry, good clean modelling, love the little spout created at the top the carrying handle doesn't look like it could support the weight inside. the top lids looks pretty good also. But what's bothering me the most is that this isn't actually a coffee grinder i'm afraid, this is a coffee perculator, with an almost teapot appearing and a plunger at the top this usually pushes down all the already ground coffee ready to drink. Other than that it's great, but i'm afraid won't be counted when it comes to judging. Stargazy Post #19 Modelling You're 2nd entry then and this is very clean indeed, well thought out and produced meshes, great shape to it, and overall looks like a coffee grinder lol. Texturing & Lighting You're textures are nearly none existant here, but that dones't matter as this is a modelling exercise. I like your plastic/glass material though it's got a soft look to it and it's seems to be on the verge of a subtle forsted plastic/perspex etc. The base white colour could be improved but just adding a little specular and possibly a small amount of reflection. Another nice entry. EF_ Post #20 Modelling He he another quick entry from you then EF_ and another one that possibly won't be counted to judging but all the time made me titter, very nice clean model of a pestle and mortar (not sure of spelling) Texturing & Lighting Not much to say here really, a white or no materials added and the lovely vray again, still very nice to see though, looks very nice lol. Garner Post #22 Modelling Now this is an entry! superb clean modelling displayed here, wonderful intersections and knife cuts, great shape around the nozzle and the little coffee collector at the bottom. This is superb. Texturing & Lighting Nice material, really really great black plastic, and the nozzle plastic/glass looks spot on, love the celever use of the coffee beans image on the top container and the little scene that you've built only adds to the beauty of the entry. Really nice entry here. Somepantsman Post #23 Modelling I'd not seen or heard of this particular grinder before you'd modelled it, it's an interesting idea. I can see how it would work also, the modelling a pretty simple actually when you look at it, but it works all the same, nice clean lines all over. Texturing & Lighting Weird texturing but then again it adds to the strange type of grinder, I think it looks almost alien, maybe that was the intention. Materials are different to say the least as is the intense green lighting, but it's still got a certain something and certainly attracts the viewer straight away. Nice entry. noyb Post #24 Modelling Inventor looks cool, i've never looked into myself or used it before but if you can create artwork like this, then it's certainly looks very interesting indeed. Great entry, the modelling looks really very nice, especially all the little detailing that's but placed into this entry. Texturing & Lighting Nice material, great metallic material, the glass looks perfect and there's a really nice warm looks to the entry aswell, and this may have been intentional but there's also a kind of coffee looking colouring to it too, which is a lovely touch. Nice entry. Shiskebab Post #25 Modelling How delightfully simple this is, it's so diddy lol, this is really nice too, great clean meshes, nice little detailing and the grinding handle looks good also. Texturing & Lighting Nice natural looking blue material for the base, a lovely pale wooded flooring and the gold/brass fitting look about right also. Nice lighting not too intense and gie an overal pleaseant entry. Manni Post #26 Modelling Now that's a model! beautifully modelling this one, like all of your entries, they are always so very well built and obviously well planned beforehand. Stunningly accurate details and this just looks awesome. Texturing & Lighting Not too bad texturing the green material has a nice sublte bump map added to it, maybe could have done with some colour variations in other sections but never mind. nice old wooden textures too. Lighting is very bright sunny day, a little too bright for my liking but that just me, i'd reduce the internsity slightly and give the raytraced shadows a visibility of between 60-70%. Wonderful entry though, really cool indeed. Aleg8r Post #28 Modelling Well you've mentioned simple in the original post, and yeah you're right very very simple, very basic mesh building here, but I truelly beleive that if you found something like this from years and years ago, I think you'd be about right with it. Texturing & Lighting Sorry but you're textures don't do anything for me here at all, I don't like giving out crits but this does look porr i'm afriad, which is really suprising because in the past you've created some materials and lighting that look stunning, you've let you modelling down with this one, sorry but you are 10 times better than this. Stargazy Post #33 Modelling Nice entry here, I could see the operator just bashing this down and down on the coffee beans over and over again. really simple modelling but works a treat. Texturing & Lighting Really nice natural lighting here, and the little coffee beans material image along with the natural looking metal and glass really pleases the eye. A favourite so far. barkwally Post #37 Modelling now this is sweet, really really basic modelling when you first glance at it, but then the little grinder bowl top section looks a little bit tricky to get right, looks cool though, really clean entry. Texturing & Lighting Gorgeous materials, great chrome and love the blue and cream/pale wood materials, the cloth table is brilliant. great lighting with Mental Ray, this is really lovely. Real 3D Post #40 Modelling A warm welcome to the Threedy Forums, and wowzers what an entry to start this, you certainly aren't a newbie modelling wise are you? this is jaw dropping accurate and just looks stunning, i'm speechless basically this is amazing. Texturing & Lighting Beautiful materials, the small coffee beans in the jar are a beautiful visual treat, the blue material, the pale wood along with the chrome looks perfect. This is superb, I can tell were going to see some brilliant entries from you in the future. Well done. H20-3DT Post #46 Modelling Lovely entry H20 nice clean mesh building, great top grinding handle and upper bowl section. Always niec detailing from yourself. Texturing & Lighting Nice wooded material, especially the way the wood looks like it's more complicated than it really is, nice metallic material also, lovely bright lighting. Cool entry. SR_6274 Post #50 Modelling Going for the same model as one of my entries, but I genuinely feel that you're look's alot better than mine, wonderfull detailing and excellent celan modelling, you've nailed the large and small screws of the front section, I struggled with those myself. Texturing & Lighting Gorgeous red material, nice chrome and a really very nice wood flooring. Lighting is natrual and not too overexposed. really very nice entry. Garner Post #52 Modelling Wow this is fantastic, the shape look so modern it's almost reminds me of the XBOX of something like that, it's just beautifully constructed and looks like a real modern day grinder. Texturing & Lighting Not much to say here, everything is perfect, this is just a stunning entry, well done. Nuff said. Real 3D Post #53 Modelling Wow this is cool, not exactly practical but looks beautiful, the modelling is so incredibly well made you really are very good, not sure if this will be allowed with the time over slightly, but still what an amazing entry here. Texturing & Lighting Wonderful materials, again as with your first entry the coffee beans looks perfect as does the metallic material, the lighting is natural and nearly photoreal. Gorgeous work. pables Post #65 Modelling You're 2nd entry then and this is really nice, I can see this type of coffee grinder in an industrial/office type situation, the modelling is flawless, the clean lines all over make this a super entry indeed. Texturing & Lighting Gorgeous metallic looks to this, the coffee beans looks impressive aswell, love the collecting cup and the customised label is a great addition. Superb work. penguins Post #68 Modelling He He, now that's what I like to see a guy with imagination, this is to say the least weird but funny also, it's nicely modelled though to be honest, the mesh is clean and pretty nicely created. Texturing & Lighting Not a nice fan of the texturing or the lighting with this one i'm afraid, however the coffee beans looks great though, this isn't winning me over i'm afraid. But you cheered me up no end. Nocturn8 Post #69 Modelling This is really nice, great clean lines, nice overall shape to it considering the time spent on it, it's very well produced being made that quickly. Texturing & Lighting Nice black plastic, great reflections and another clever use of coffee beans pictures in the top collector. This is nice and does exactly what it says on the tin as it were. RockstarKate Post #71 Modelling woah this is gorgeous, very very well made, beautifully contructed, and the minor and major details on this are expertly created. Texturing & Lighting Beautiful look and feel to this, again going for a coffee colouring theme which works a treat. great lighting also, this is a brilliant entry. noyb Post #75 Modelling Now this is special, great style with this one the front dial and top hinged lid is very cool. Look very nicely made and especially good in the time created. Texturing & Lighting Obviously no textures or materials used here, but the lighting is subtle, natural and looks really really cool. awesome entry. OK well that's it for the time being, I hope that my crits and comments weren't too harsh, there very well may be spelling and punctuation mistakes above but what the heck I haven't the time to go through it all again lol. See you soon. Kind Regards CG

for CG-3DT:
on ur comments for Post#40: Many thanks CG, actually i am just amazed by ur comments myself as according to me i am not that good modeller coz lighting texturing is my fav. stream. been doing max for abt 3.5 years now, i've been here on forums since 2006 but due to office work never really get to post much but this here is my favourite place, to learn n to have fun too, thanks for motivation. on ur comments for Post#53: When i found this image i was just curious to make it, but i was not sure whether i would be able to do it in time, so before starting the modelling i planned for a couple of minutes on where to start n then i watched the time go by me, the tweaking of the mesh threw me over-time, but i am proud that i could do it in one hour+,no matter whether i win or not, it was so much fun to do, thanks for wonderful comments. Will continue such works in future...best of luck to all. (can i tell u that i am getting curious for posting another entry?) Last edited by Real 3D; 06-04-2008 at 10:09 AM.. |

Classicgamer 3dt: Yea I agree with the textures and lighting. Being self taught that is the one thing I need to work on. All I used there was an ambient occlusion overlay.
No wonder your a mod. The models are amazing. So clean and the render is perfect. My favorite is entry number 2. And once more thanks aton for the advice. |

C&c
Okay to start off all the entries are great, the standard in these competitions always amazes me. people often ask me why i bother with the challenges and i always give them the same answer, where else can we all compete on a level playing field with some of the greatest 3D artists around the world, plus it builds a good portfolio LOL
okay onto the posts Marty: post#1 great starter, i always love your starters they always set the tone of the whole competition, nicely done and well presented i think. Classic Gamer: post#16 Wicked: i love the fact you even modelled the text as aposed to making a material map, really well modelled and a superbly clean mesh and great render to boot, thumbs up from me. Manni: post#26 WOW really well modelled and the amount of detail is wicked yet it is still simple as a mesh, its amazing how well this is modelled a definate vote from me, clean render and nice materials only comment would be to use final gather or up the bounces as some of the shadows really do black out the textures on the back wall. Classic Gamer: post#29 Your just showing off, clean mesh great render, nice clay. you really do make cinema4D look like a great package, i cant tell i am going to need to look at it again as these images you are producing are quite stunning. (on a side note i say vray has released its version for C4D now too) Classic Gamer: post#30 nice use of slpines in this one. and a great looking metal material, thumbs up again. Real 3D: post#40 firstly welcome to threedy and the SMC now for the entry. absolutely spot on, My favourite so far, i love the rednder and materials, lighting is perfect, the mesh is clean and you have used seperate objects brilliantly to piece together the final product, really nice and you even modelled some beans, thumbs up Pables: post#65 another well thoughout model, good clean lines on the mesh and nothing seems to be misplaced right down to the plastic cups, great materials and an excellent camera angle for the render, really good entry thumbs up for you sir. Rockstar Kate: post#71 as always excellent entry,i should really c0omment more but your entries are always outstanding both in moddelling and rendering, the materials are spot on and the colours just match the product perfectly, really well executed thumbs up. and in response, @Pables, yes the second entry is indeed Vray, i like to swap between MR and vray i just havent decided which one i like best, i am lucky to work in a place where i get to use alot of software but still havent really found the one that produces a perfect render no matter what, both Vray and MR have there strong points and with MR getting stronger al the time i can just never make my mind up..LOL @Classic Gamer, thanks for your comments there really appreciated especially from a MOD, @Beta, yeah i know what you mean about the text, i added it in last minute and it shows, i'll have to go back and amend it on a proper final render.

it really motivates me ![]() I usually use Vray for my renders, because I find it easier to do the render settings and the shaders than Mental ray. But the next smc Ill try to do some renders with fryrender. |

But it's not strictly a grinder, a coffee grinder will have a mechanism that rips, tears and shreads apart the small coffee beans, whereas you're hammer and other things would only crush the beans. CG
